Before You Begin
Thank you for choosing the Sony RDS radio!
It will give you many hours of reliable service
and listening pleasure.
Before operating the radio, please read these
instructions thoroughly and retain them for
future reference.
Features
What is RDS ?
The RDS (Radio Data System) is a radio digital
information system developed by the EBU
(European Broadcasting Union) and introduced
in 1987. Using the 57 kHz sub-carrier of FM
broadcasting, the RDS enables you to receive a
variety of information such as station names and
traffic information.
However, the availability of the RDS data varies
according to areas. Therefore, there may be
places where you may not be able to receive
some of the following data.

easy pinpoint tuning.
• Up to 10 stations in FM and 5 stations in AM
can be preset.
• Tuned frequency is digitally displayed to

Installing the
Batteries
(See Fig. A)
1 Open the lid at the rear of the radio.
2 Install two R6 (size AA) batteries (not
supplied) with correct polarity.
3 Close the lid.

Knowing When to Replace the
Batteries
• When the batteries become weak, the sound
becomes weak and distorted, and “ i”
flashes in the display.
Replace the batteries with new ones.
When the batteries are completely
exhausted, the radio is turned off and “
i”
lights.
• Before replacing the batteries, make sure that
the radio is turned off. Replace the batteries
within one minute. Otherwise, the clock
setting and preset stations could be erased. In
this case, set the clock and preset the stations
again.
Note
When the unit is not being used for a long period
of time, remove the batteries to avoid damage
from battery leakage and corrosion.
Setting the Clock
The display will flash “AM 12:00” or “0:00”
when the batteries are first installed.
Set the clock when the radio is turned off.
1 To stop flashing of the display, press
ENTER/CLOCK.
2 While holding down ENTER/CLOCK,
press SCAN TUNE/TIME SET + or – to
set the clock to the current time.
Each time you press the button, the
digits move forward or back by one.
When you keep the button pressed, the
digits change rapidly.
When you release ENTER/CLOCK, the
clock starts operating, and “:” starts
flashing.
• The clock system varies depending on the
model you own.
12-hour system : “AM12:00”= midnight
24-hour system : “0:00”= midnight
• If you want to check the current time while
you are listening to the radio, set STATION
NAME to CLOCK. The current time and “ ”
will appear in the display.
• The RDS may also be used to set the clock
using the Clock Auto-Adjust of the CT
function. (See “Using the RDS Function”)

Operating the Radio
Auto-Scan Tuning
1 Connect the headphones to 2 .
2 Press POWER.
3 Adjust VOL (volume).
4 Press BAND to select the band.
Each press of the button changes the
band in the following order.
FM1* FM2* AM
* When using FM1 or FM2 preset mode, you
may listen to the radio on either mode.
(See “Preset Tuning”)
5 Press and hold SCAN TUNE/TIME SET
+ or –, then release it.
Scanning will start and when a station
is received, scanning will stop and the
station can be heard.
• If the desired station cannot be received, tune
in the station by pressing SCAN TUNE/TIME
SET + or – repeatedly.
• To turn off the radio, press POWER. The clock
will be displayed even when the radio is
turned off.
• To improve radio reception
FM: Extend the headphones cord which
functions as the FM antenna.
AM: Rotate the unit horizontally for optimum
reception. A ferrite bar antenna is built in
the unit.
• Set FM SENS to LOCAL if interference is
prevalent when radio wave intensity is
dramatically stronger.
Under normal conditions, set to DX.
• Tuning to an FM station, you may see a
station name changing from a frequency after
tuning to a frequency of a station in the
display. This applies especially to FM stations
which have RDS in the wave. (See “Station
Service Name Display”)
Changing the Display Mode
To change the display mode, set the STATION
NAME switch to CLOCK or STATION in
accordance with your preference.
The indication shows the band and frequency or
current time.
• When you set STATION NAME to CLOCK, and
when the power is turned on, the frequency
will be displayed for about 10 seconds and
then the current time and “ ” will appear on
the display while you are listening to the
radio. If you want to check the frequency or
the station name, press ENTER/CLOCK.
• Even if you set STATION NAME to CLOCK,
you can tune a station. When you press SCAN
TUNE/TIME SET + or –, you can see
frequencies of a station in the display. After
about 10 seconds, the current time apperars in
the display.
• If a traffic information starts when reception
of a traffic information is standing by, the
station name will be displayed even if you set
STATION NAME to CLOCK. After about 10
seconds, the current time appears again in the
display.
Preset Tuning
You can preset up to 10 stations in FM (5 stations
in FM1, 5 stations in FM2), and 5 stations in AM.
Presetting a Station
Example: To set FM 90 MHz in preset button 2
for FM2.
1 Press POWER.
2 Press BAND to select FM2.
3 Tune in FM 90 MHz.
While holding down ENTER/CLOCK,
press the desired preset button (i.e., in
this case, preset button 2).
You can hear the confirmation beep
and preset number "2" appears in the
display.
PRESET PRESET
To preset another station, repeat these steps.
• To change the preset station, preset a new
station number. The previous station will be
cancelled.
Tuning in a Preset Station
1 Press POWER.
2 Select the band with BAND.
3 Press desired preset tuning button.
4 Adjust VOL (volume).
Using the RDS
Function
The following functions are available with this
radio using the RDS data.
Station Service Name
Display
This function displays the name of the currently
tuned station in the display.
1 Select the FM band (FM 1 or FM 2).
2 Tune in a desired station.
If the radio receives a station transmitting the
RDS data, “RDS” lights and the name of that
station will appear in the display. When the
radio cannot receive the RDS data, “RDS” turns
off.
• To check the frequency you are listening to,
press ENTER/CLOCK. While the button is
being held down, the frequency appears in
the display.
Notes
• The RDS data can be received only on the FM
band.
• The RDS function of this radio will not be
activated if the FM station being received is
not transmitting the RDS data.
It may also not work properly in areas where
the RDS transmissions are in the experimental
stage.
Using Alternative
Search
1 Continuously press the ALTERNATIVE
SEARCH until the station with a
stronger signal is found.
Some stations such as “BBC”, have several
different frequencies. The unit begins to search
for an alternative frequency with a stronger
signal in the same network from the AF data(List
of Alternative Frequencies). If a stronger signal
station is found, the unit retunes to that station.
• If no alternative frequency is found, “NO AF”
appears in the display.
Receiving Traffic
Announcements
This function searches and stands by for a traffic
information using TP (Traffic Programme) and
TA (Traffic Announcement) data.
Using this function, the radio automatically
searches the traffic information from the station
you are listening to, and changes its mode to
receive the traffic announcement when the
broadcasting starts.
1 Select the FM band (FM 1 or FM 2).
If the station selected has RDS data,
“RDS ” lights.
2 Press TRAFFIC INFO to get “ ”
while “RDS” appears.
Reception of a traffic announcement is
standing by.
The search for traffic information starts. When a
traffic announcement starts, “
“ starts
flashing. You can listen to the traffic announce-
ment.
Notes
• When the station you are listening to, is not
traffic information station nor station with
EON data, a beep sounds.
• When the RDS data is not received
continuously, “ “ disappears in the
display window even if the reception of a
traffic information is standing by.
• If the AM band is tuned in while the “ “
indicator is in the display, “ “ turns off
automatically. When you tune in FM again,
“
“ lights.
• When the radio is off, the traffic
announcement is not functioned.
Enhanced Other Networks–EON
The EON function extends the radio functions by
enabling it to track other stations transmitting
the EON data while it is tuned to a network
station.
If the radio is receiving a station which is
transmitting the EON data while “
“ appears
in the display, it will automatically tune to
another station (same network) when the
station starts broadcasting a traffic announce-
ment.
Example: While you are listening to the BBC 1
broadcasting when the traffic information starts
at the BBC KENT station, the radio tunes to the
station automatically.
When the announcement is over, the radio will
retune to the previous station.
• To stop the traffic information, press TRAFFIC
INFO. The unit tunes to previous station
automtically.
Notes
• If the station has several frequencies, the radio
will tune one by one automatically.
• In a case that stations are preset in the preset
memories by preset tuning, the radio will
choose the frequencies from the preset
memories.
Setting the Clock Using
the CT Function
The CT function of the RDS enables the built-in
clock in the radio to automatically synchronize
with the CT data being received.
1 Set the STATION NAME to CLOCK
while “RDS” appears in the display.
The current time appears in the display.
2 Press CLOCK AUTO ADJUST.
The CT function activates. “ “ starts to
flash in the display. When the current
time is set by CT data, “ “ lights.
• To cancel the function, press CLOCK AUTO
ADJUST so that “ “ will disappear.
Notes
• If the radio cannot receive the CT data for 2
minutes, "NO CT" appears in the display and
then the function will turn off.
• The CT time may vary depending upon
countries.
• There may be cases when the CT function may
not be activated in some areas or stations. In
this case, press CLOCK AUTO ADJUST so that
“
“ will disappear.
Using other
Functions
Light function
Press LIGHT to turn on the light for about 10
seconds to view the display in the dark.
• If any function on the unit is performed
during the light on, the light continues to turn
on for longer than 10 seconds.
To Prevent Accidental
Change of the Receiving
Station–HOLD function.
Press HOLD. “ H” is displayed, indicating that
all the functions of the buttons are locked.
To release the key protection, press HOLD again
to “
H” disappear.
Using the Belt Holder
(See Fig. B)
Attach or detach the belt holder as the illustra-
tion shown.
Precautions
• Operate the unit only on 3 V DC with two R6
(size AA) batteries.
• Avoid exposure to temperature extremes,
direct sunlight, moisture, sand, dust or
mechanical shock. Never leave in a car parked
in the sun.
• Should anything fall into the unit, remove the
batteries, and have the unit checked by
qualified personnel before operating it any
further.
• To clean the casing, use a soft cloth dampened
with a mild detergent solution.
• In vehicles or buildings, radio reception may
be difficult of noisy. Try listening near a
window.
Notes on Headphones
Road safety
Do not use headphones while driving, cycling, or
operating any motorized vehicle. It may create a
traffic hazard and is illegal in many areas. It can
also be potentially dangerous to play your
headphones at high volume while walking,
especially at pedestrian crossings. You should
exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in
potentially hazardous situations.
Preventing hearing damage
Avoid using headphones at high volume.
Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud
and extended play. If you experience a ringing in
your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
Caring for others
Keep the volume at a moderate level. This will
allow you to hear outside sounds and to be
considerate to people around you.
Warning
If there is lightning when you are using the unit,
take off the headphones immediately.
If you have any questions or problems concern-
ing your unit, please consult your nearest Sony
dealer.
Troubleshooting
Guide
Should any problem persist after you have made
the following checks, consult your nearest Sony
dealer.
The front panel buttons do not operate at all.
• “
H ” is displayed. Press the HOLD button
so that “ H ” will disappear.
Display is dim, or no indication is displayed.
• Weak batteries.
• The unit is being used in extremely high or
low temperatures or in a place with excessive
moisture.
Very weak or interrupted sound, or unsatis-
factory reception.
• Weak batteries
• In a vehicle or in a building, listen near a
window.
The station cannot be received when a preset
tuning button is pressed.
• The station has not been preset.
• The memory of the station has been erased.
Preset the station again.
Sound is not heard and “ i “ flashes in the
display.
• Weak batteries.

Características
¿Qué es RDS?
El sistema de datos radiofónicos (RDS) es un
sistema de información digital de radio
desarrollado por la Unión Europea de
Radiodifusión (EBU) introducido en 1987.
Utilizando la subportadora de 57 kHz de
radiodifusión de FM, el sistema RDS le permitirá
recibir gran variedad de información, como los
nombres de la emisoras e información sobre el
tráfico.
Sin embargo, la disponibilidad del sistema RDS
variará de acuerdo con la zona. Por lo tanto, es
posible que existan lugares en los que no logre
recibir algunos de los datos siguientes.

Cuándo reemplazar las pilas
• Cuando las pilas se debiliten, el sonido
también se debilitará y distorsionará, y en el
visualizador parpadeará “
i”.
Reemplace las pilas por otras nuevas.
Cuando las pilas se agoten completamente, la
alimentación de la radio se desconectará y se
indicará permanentemente “
i”.
• Antes de reemplazar las pilas, cerciórese de
que la alimentación de la radio esté
desconectada. Reemplace las pilas antes de un
minuto. De lo contrario, el ajuste del reloj, y
las emisoras memorizadas se borrarían. En
este caso, vuelva a ajustar el reloj y a
memorizar las emisoras.
Nota
Cuando no vaya a utilizar la unidad durante
mucho tiempo, extraiga las pilas para evitar los
daños que podría causar le electrólito de las
mismas en caso de fugarse.
Ajuste del reloj
Cuando coloque por primera vez las pilas, en el
visualizador parpadeará “AM 12:00” o “0:00”.
Ajuste el reloj cuando la alimentación de la radio
esté desconectada.

iniciará el parpadeo de “:”.
• El sistema de reloj variará dependiendo del
modelo.

• Si desea comprobar la hora actual mientras

sintonice la emisora presionando
repetidamente SCAN TUNE/TIME SET + o –.
• Para desconectar la alimentación de la radio,
presione POWER. La hora del reloj se
visualizará incluso aunque desconecte la
alimentación de la radio.
• Para mejorar la radiorrecepción
FM: Extienda el cable de los auriculares,
porque funciona como antena de FM.
AM: Gire horizontalmente la unidad hasta
obtener la óptima recepción. La unidad
posee una antena de barra de ferrita
incorporada.
• Si la intensidad de la señal es notablemente
intensa y hay interferencias continuas, ponga
FM SENS en LOCAL.
En condiciones normales, deje el selector en
DX.
• Cuando sintonice una emisora de FM es
posible que vea en el visualizador un nombre
de emisora cambiando desde una frecuencia
después de haber sintonizado la frecuencia de
una emisora. Esto se aplica especialmente a
emisoras de FM que posean el servicio de
RDS. (Consulte “Visualización del nombre
del servicio de la emisora”.)
Cambio del modo de visualización
Para cambiar el modo de visualización, ponga el
selector STATION NAME en CLOCK o STATION
de acuerdo con sus gustos.
La indicación mostrará la banda y la frecuencia o
la hora actual.
• Cuando haya puesto STATION NAME en
CLOCK, y conecte la alimentación, la
frequencia se visualizará durante unos 10
segundos, y después en el visualizador
aparecerán hora actual y “ ”. Si desea
comprobar la frecuencia de la emisora,
presione ENTER/CLOCK.
• Aunque haya ajustado STATION NAME a
CLOCK, podrá sintonizar una emisora.
Cuando presione TUNER/TIME SET + o –,
podrá ver las frecuencias de las emisoras en el
visualizador. Después de unos 10 segundos,
en el visualizador aparecerá la hora actual.
• Si comienza una información sobre el tráfico
durante la espera de dicha información, se
visualizará el nombre de la emisora aunque
haya puesto STATION NAME en CLOCK.
Después de unos 10 segundos, en el
visualizador volverá a aparecer la hora actual.
Sintonía de emisoras

Usted podrá memorizar hasta 10 emisoras de FM
(5 en FM1 y otras 5 en FM2), y 5 más en AM.
Memorización de una emisora
Ejemplo: Para almacenar 90 MHz de FM en el
número de memorización 2 para FM2.
1 Presione POWER.
2 Presione BAND para seleccionar FM2.
3 Sintonice 90 MHz de FM.
Manteniendo pulsada ENTER/CLOCK,
presione la tecla de memorización
deseada (es decir, en este caso, presione
la tecla 2).
Usted podrá oír un pitido de
confirmación y en el visualizador
aparecerá el número de memorización
“2”.
PRESET PRESET
Para memorizar otra emisora, repita estos
pasos.
• Para cambiar una emisora memorizada,
memorice otra nueva. La emisora
previamente memorizada se borrará.

1 Presione POWER.
2 Seleccione la banda con BAND.
3 Presione la tecla correspondiente a la
emisora memorizada.
4 Ajuste VOL.
Utilización de la
función de RDS
Con esta radio, utilizando los datos de RDS,
dispondrá de las funciones siguientes.

Con esta función se visualizará el nombre de la
emisora actualmente sintonizada.
1 Seleccione la banda de FM (FM 1 o
FM 2).
2 Sintonice la emisora deseada.
Si la radio recibe una emisora que transmita
datos de RDS, en el visualizador aparecerán
“RDS” y el nombre de tal emisora. Cuando la
radio no pueda recibir datos de RDS, “RDS”
desparecerá.
• Para comprobar la frecuencia de la emisora
recibida, presione ENTER/CLOCK. Mientras
mantenga presionada la tecla, en el
visualizador se indicará la frecuencia.

• Los datos de RDS solamente podrán recibirse
en la banda de FM.
• La función de RDS de esta radio no se activará
si la emisora de FM que esté recibiéndose no

También es posible que no trabaje
adecuadamente en zonas en las que las
transmisiones de RDS se encuentren en etapa
experimental.
Utilización de la
búsqueda de
frecuencias alternativas
1 Presione continuamente ALTERNA-
TIVE SEARCH hasta encontrar una
emisora con señal más intensa.
Algunas emisoras, como “BBC”, poseen varias
frecuencias diferentes. La unidad comenzará la
búsqueda de una frecuencia alternativa con señal
más intensa de la misma red de los datos de AF
(lista de frecuencias alternativas). Si se encuentra
una emisora de señal más intensa, la unidad
resintonizará tal emisora.
• Si no se encuentra emisora alternativa, en el
visualizador aparecerá “NO AF”.
Recepción de anuncios
sobre el tráfico
Esta función le permitirá buscar y permanecer a
la espera de información sobre el tráfico
utilizando los datos de programas de tráfico (TP)
y anuncios sobre el tráfico (TA).
Utilizando esta función, la radio buscará
automáticamente información sobre el tráfico de

cuando se inicie la emisión.
1 Seleccione la banda de FM (FM 1 o
FM 2).
Si la emisora seleccionada está
transmitiendo datos de RDS, en el
visualizador aparecerá “RDS”.
2 Presione TRAFFIC INFO para hacer que
aparezca “
” mientras esté
visualizándose “RDS”.
La unidad permanecerá a la espera de
anuncios sobre el tráfico.
Se iniciará la búsqueda de información sobre el
tráfico. Cuando comience un anuncio sobre el
tráfico, “
” empezará a parpadear. Usted
podrá escuchar el anuncio sobre el tráfico.
Notas
• Cuando la emisora que esté escuchando no
transmita anuncios sobre el tráfico ni datos de
RDS, sonará un pitido.
• Cuando no se reciban continuamente datos de
RDS, “ ” desaparecerá del visualizador
incluso aunque la unidad se encuentre a la
espera de la recepción de anuncios sobre el
tráfico.
• Si sintonice en la banda de AM mientras esté
visualizándose “ ”, “ ” desaparecerá
automáticamente. Cuando vuelva a
sintonizar en FM, aparecerá “
”.
• Cuando desconecte la alimentación de la
radio, la función de recepción de anuncios
sobre el tráfico no trabajará.
Otras redes mejoradas–EON
La función de EON amplía las funciones de la
radio permitiéndole buscar otras emisoras que
transmitan datos de EON mientras esté
sintonizando una emisora de la red.
Si la radio está recibiendo una emisora que esté
transmitiendo datos de EON mientras esté
visualizándose “
”, sintonizará
automáticamente otra emisora (de la misma red)
cuando la emisora comience a transmitir
anuncios sobre el tráfico.
Ejemplo: Mientras esté escuchando una emisión
de BBC 1, si la emisora BBC KENT inicia la
transmisión de información sobre tráfico, la radio
sintonizará automáticamente esta emisora.
Cuando finalice el anuncio, la radio resintonizará
la emisora anterior.
• Para parar la información sobre el tráfico,
presione TRAFFIC INFO. La radio sintonizará
automáticamente la emisora anterior.
Notas
• Si la emisora posee varias frecuencias, la radio
sintonizará automáticamente una tras otra.
• En caso de que las emisoras estén
memorizadas, la radio elegirá las frecuencias
memorizadas.
Ajuste del reloj
utilizando la función de
CT
La función de CT del sistema RDS le permitirá
sincronizar automáticamente el reloj de la radio
con los datos de CT recibidos.
1 Ponga STATION NAME en CLOCK
mientras esté visualizándose “RDS”.
En el visualizador aparecerá la hora
actual.
2 Presione CLOCK AUTO ADJUST.
Se activará al función de CT. En el
visualizador comenzará a parpadear
“
”. Cuando la hora actual se ajuste
con los datos de CT, aparecerá “ ”.
• Para cancelar la función, presione CLOCK
AUTO ADJUST de forma que desaparezca
“
”.
Notas
• Si la radio no puede recibir los datos de CT
durante 2 minutos, en el visualizador
aparecerá “NO CT” y después la función se
desactivará.
• La hora de CT puede variar dependiendo del
país.
• Puede darse el caso en el que la función de CT
no se active en ciertas zonas o con algunas
emisoras. En tal caso, presione CLOCK AUTO
ADJUST de forma que desaparezca “
”.
Utilización de otras
funciones
Función de iluminación
Presione LIGHT para activar la iluminación
durante unos 10 segundos para poder ver el
visualizador en la obscuridad.
• Si utiliza cualquier función de la unidad con la
iluminación activada, ésta continuará activada
durante otros 10 segundos.
Para evitar el cambio
accidental de la emisora
recibida - función de
bloqueo
Presione HOLD. En el visualizador aparecerá
“
H” indicando que todas las funciones de las
teclas están bloqueadas.
Para desactivar el bloqueo de las teclas, vuelva a
presionar HOLD para hacer que desaparezca
“
H”.
Utilización de la presilla
para el cinturón
(Consulte la Fig. B)
Instale o quite la presilla para el cinturón como
se muestra en la ilustración.
Precauciones
• Alimente la unidad sólo con 3 V CC con dos
pilas R6 (tamaño AA).
• Evite exponer la unidad a temperaturas
extremadas, la luz solar directa, la humedad,
arena, polvo, y golpes. No la deje nunca en un
automóvil aparcado al sol.
• Si cae algo dentro de la unidad, quite las pilas
y haga que la unidad sea comprobada por
personal cualificado antes de volver a
utilizarla.
• Para limpiar la caja, utilice un paño suave
humedecido en una solución poco
concentrada de detergente.
• En vehículos o en edificios es posible que la
radiorrecepción resulte difícil o ruidosa. Trate
de escuchar cerca de una ventana.
Notas sobre los auriculares
Seguridad en la carretera
No utilice los auriculares cuando conduzca, vaya
en bicicleta, o maneje cualquier vehículo
motorizado. Esto podría suponer un peligro
para el tráfico, y es ilegal en ciertos países.
También puede resultar potencialmente
peligroso escuchar a través de los auriculares a
gran volumen mientras camine, especialmente en
pasos cebra. En situaciones potencialmente
peligrosas, deberá tener mucho cuidado o dejar
de utilizar los auriculares.
Cuidado de sus oídos
Evite utilizar los auriculares a gran volumen.
Los expertos en oídos no aconsejan la escucha
prolongada a gran nivel. Si experimenta un
silbido en sus oídos, reduzca el volumen, o deje
de escuchar a través de los auriculares.
Respeto a los demás
Mantenga el volumen a un nivel moderado. Esto
le permitirá escuchar los sonidos del exterior y
respetar a quienes se encuentren a su alrededor.
Advertencia
Cuando esté utilizando la unidad, si hay una
tormenta eléctrica, quítese inmediatamente los
auriculares.
Si tiene alguna pregunta o problema con respecto
a la unidad, póngase en contacto con su
proveedor Sony.
Guía para la solución
de problemas
Si el problema persiste después de haber
realizado las comprobaciones siguientes,
consulte a su proveedor Sony.
Las teclas del panel frontal no funcionan en
absoluto.
• Está visualizándose “
H ”. Presione la tecla
HOLD para hacer que desaparezca “ H ”.
La visualización es débil, o no se visualiza
ninguna indicación.
• Las pilas están débiles.
• La unidad está utilizándose a temperaturas
extremadamente altas o bajas, o en un lugar
con humedad excesiva.
El sonido es muy débil o se oye interrumpido,
o la recepción es insatisfactoria.
• Las pilas están débiles.
• En un vehículo o en un edificio, escuche cerca
de una ventana.
No es posible recibir emisoras memorizadas
con las teclas.
• No ha memorizado las emisoras.
• La emisoras se han borrado de la memoria.
Vuelva a memorizarlas.
No se oye sonido, y en el visualizador
parpadea “
i”.
• Las pilas están débiles.
