pool includes zero pages, usability worsens because the system tries to use more capacity than
is actually needed. In such cases, you can reclaim zero pages in THP volumes. In addition to re-
claiming zero pages periodically, you can reclaim zero pages when performing a backup or
restoring data from tape storage. Evaluating and analyzing the operation status of THP pools and
optimizing data placement (Tiered Storage Manager license must be registered) uses the Mobility
tab to evaluate and analyze the operation status that is related to a THP pool and to optimize
data placement. Monitoring Smart Tiers Software pools and replacing data in Smart Tiers Software
pools can be set to execute automatically by specifying a time or interval in advance, or you can
manually execute at a time of your choice according to the requirements of your work. If the Tiered
Storage Manager license is registered, register the execution start time and end time of Smart
Tiers Software pools monitoring and data replacement as a template schedule. Editing a tiering
policy in Smart Tiers Software pools, automatically places data that has a high frequency of I/O
operations preferentially in a high-speed hardware tier. To avoid this and to ensure that data with
high importance, but with fewer I/O operations, is placed in a hardware tier that maintains a
certain speed at all times, you can fix the target hardware tier.

Prerequisites for creating THP pools

Before creating THP pools, you must register the target storage system and verify these items, depending
on the storage system.

When using XP24000/20000 and HP StorageWorks P9500 Disk Array for THP pools:

Only parity groups from which volumes have already been created can be targets

When using HP StorageWorks P9500 Disk Array for Smart Tiers Software pools:

Hardware tier: drive type and drive speed (RPM)

Only parity groups for each hardware tier from which volumes have already been created can
be targets

Creating a THP pool

To create a THP pool:

1.

On the Resources tab, select THP Pools under the target storage system.

2.

Click Create Pool. The Create Pool dialog box opens.

3.

Specify the pool name and other information.

4.

If you want to manually monitor or relocate Smart Tiers Software pools, set Tier Management in
Smart Tiers Software Options to Manual.

5.

Click Show Plan to review the plan and specify additional information, as appropriate:

• Verify the information that is displayed.
• Enter a name in Task Name.
• Specify when the task should execute.

6.

Click Submit.

The plan is registered as a task.

7.

In the Storage Systems tree, return to the target storage system, click THP Pools and confirm that
the pool is created.

Verifying THP pools

Before you can verify THP pools, you must have created the pools you want to verify.
