Secondary volumes (that is, copy destination volumes) are often referred to as S-VOLs in storage
system documentation.

Reserve Function

The HP StorageWorks XP LUN Manager software enables Remote Web Console users to change LU
path configurations and command device configurations. However, if you use Data Retention Utility
to protect a volume, Remote Web Console users will be unable to change LU path settings and
command device setting on the volume. For detailed information about how to prevent Remote Web
Console users from changing the settings, see

Preventing Remote Web Console Users from Configuring

LU Paths and Command Devices (Setting the Reserve Function)

on page 24.

The Reserved column in the Data Retention window shows whether Remote Web Console users can
change LU path settings and command device settings on the volume.

If RAID Manager is installed on a host, you can change LU path settings and command device settings
from the host.

Interoperability with Other Products and Functions

This section provides information on using Data Retention Utility with other products.

HP StorageWorks XP LUN Expansion (LUSE)

You cannot combine volumes that do not have the Read/Write attribute when you create a LUSE
volume. You can, however, assign an access attribute other than Read/Write to the resulting LUSE
volume.

You cannot release a LUSE volume that does not have the Read/Write attribute.

HP StorageWorks XP Virtual LVI/LUN

You cannot convert volumes that do not have the Read/Write attribute into spaces.

You cannot initialize customized volumes that do not have the Read/Write attribute.

RAID Manager

When you view the Data Retention window, some other user might be using RAID Manager to change
the access attribute of a volume. If the RAID Manager user changes the access attribute of a volume
when you view the Data Retention window, you will be unable to change the access attribute of the
volume by using Data Retention Utility. Then, if you attempt to change the access attribute of the
volume by using Data Retention Utility, an error occurs. If an error occurs, click File and then Refresh
on the menu bar of the Remote Web Console main window, and then retry changing the access
attribute of the volume.

XP Thin Provisioning

With XP Thin Provisioning, you can use Data Retention Utility when the pool is full. For detailed
information, see the section describing full pool handling in the HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000
Thin Provisioning Software User Guide
.
