About data collection tasks

On the Administration tab, under Managed Resources you can add, refresh, edit, and remove storage
systems and hosts, which adds or changes Command View AE Suite information about the storage
or host resource.

You can also add or refresh storage systems and hosts on the Resources tab, but not edit or remove
them. The process for removing hosts cannot be a data collection task because this involves storage
resource operations such as releasing volume allocation and deleting volumes. You manage the
process of removing hosts using the Tasks & Alerts tab.

Performing these tasks on either the Administration or the Resources tab opens the same dialog, which,
after you submit the task, informs you that a data collection task was registered. Data collection tasks
are listed on the Administration tab, under Managed Resources, on the Data Collection Tasks tab.
These tasks can be sorted, filtered, and deleted like other tasks listed on the Tasks & Alerts tab.

NOTE:

The Tasks & Alerts tab does not list data collection tasks, and the global monitoring bar task status
links do not show status for data collection tasks.

For each data collection task:

Type indicates the type of data collection task performed (for example, Add Storage Systems)

Status indicates completion or failure of the task

TIP:

Click the Status link for a task to view task details. If the task fails, a message is included in the
Summary that describes the reason the task failed.
When a task fails or it was stopped prior to its completion, it can be restarted while retaining the
same configured values set when the task was initially registered. However, you cannot restart a task
once the task is deleted. For example, if a task has been restarted several times, and the last instance
of this task is restarted and deleted, the task cannot be restarted again.
Delete finished tasks if they are no longer necessary.

Restarting a data collection task

Data collection tasks might fail due to a communication error or be caused by the exclusive control
locking done by the target storage system. Data collection tasks that fail before they complete can be
restarted. Restarted tasks inherit the values that were set at the time the task was registered.

Prerequisites

Tasks to complete beforehand:

Verify that the target task status is Failed.

1.

On the Administration tab, select Managed Resources.

2.

Click the Data Collection Tasks tab, and click the Failed link for the data collection task.

View the Message in the Data Collection Task Detail dialog box to determine whether the task
can be restarted.
