Managing tasks

This module describes how to manage tasks.

About tasks

Tasks are submitted to run specific functions, such as allocating or creating volumes, or grouping
storage resources.

Typically, you schedule tasks to run at a time that is best suited for your storage system environment,
such as during a period of low storage system activity. Task status and task results display in a task
list for tasks that you, or other users, submit. Tasks might encounter problems that cause them to fail
due to a communication error or caused by exclusive control locking done by a target storage system.

Tasks can be run immediately or at a specified date and time, which allows you to run storage
tasks at the most appropriate time.

You can view the progress or the results of all previously submitted tasks on the Tasks & Alerts
tab.

The schedule for any task in a Waiting status can be changed.

You can specify an email address when submitting migration tasks to enable email notification
when the task completes, either by completing successfully, failing, or stopping.

TIP:

Email notification makes it unnecessary to manually monitor the progress of a task. This setting
can be used in cases where you want to verify the results for a task, when it is necessary to contact
a server administrator or application administrator regarding changes to storage system settings,
or when you submit a task that will take a long time to complete.

When a task is registered, Command View AE Suite reserves any resources that the task requires
(such as, volumes, parity groups, pools, host groups), and denies access to those resources by
other operations until the task either completes or is cancelled.

Data migration tasks and data placement profile tasks can be stopped before completion, and
can then be restarted.

If a task fails or was stopped prior to completion, the task can be restarted except under the fol-
lowing two conditions:
• When a task has been moved to the History tab (data collection tasks cannot be moved to the

History tab)
