PPL-200 Portable 200W Strobe

The Phottix PPL-200 is a light-weight and portable 200W battery-

powered strobe. The PPL-200 can be attached to your camera

with the supplied bracket, hand-held using the included grip, or

attached to a light stand for use with an umbrella (hardware not

included).

Connecting the Battery and Strobe

Insert the power cable into one of the Battery Power Points. Con-

nect the other end of the cable to the Battery Power Port on the

PPL-200. Turn on the Battery Power Switch. Press the Power On/

Off Switch on the PPL-200 to turn it on.

Disconnecting the Battery and Strobe

Press the Power On/Off Switch on the PPL-200 to turn off the

strobe. Move the Battery Power Switch to the off position. Discon-

nect the power cable from the strobe and battery.

Battery Power Indicator

The Battery Power Indicator on the strobe light will turn Red when

battery power is low (10% or less remaining).

Selecting Modes

The PPL-200 has the following modes: Manual, Quick Continu-

ous/Multi, and Slow Sync. Modes can be changed by pressing the

Mode Selector Switch. Power levels can be adjusted by turning

the Mode Selector Switch.

Manual Mode

In Manual Mode the PPL-200’s power level can be set from 1/1 to

1/64, in 1/3 stop steps.

1. Press the Mode Selector Switch until MANUAL appears on the

strobe’s LCD

2. Turn the Mode Selector Switch until the desired power level

is reached.

Quick Continuous/Multi Mode

In Quick Continuous Mode the PPL-200 will fire 5 or 15 continuous

flashes. The power level of these flashes cannot be adjusted. With

5 flashes set the flash power is 80WS, with 15 flashes set the flash

power is 60WS.

In Quick Multi Mode the PPL-200 will fire three continuous flashes.

The power level can be set to 1/16, 1/32 or 1/64.

1. Press the Mode Selector Switch until QUICK CONT or QUICK

MULTI appear on the strobe’s LCD

2. In Quick Continuous Mode: Select 5 or 15 flashes by turning

the Mode Selector Switch.

3. In Quick Multi Mode: Select the power level by turning the

Mode Selector Switch.

Slow Sync Mode

In Slow Sync Mode the PPL-200 will trigger optically from an on-

camera flash. Power levels can be set from 1/1 to 1/64.

1. Press the Mode Selector Switch until SLOW appears on the

strobe’s LCD

2. Press the Optical Slave On/Off Switch. The Optical Slave Mode

Light will turn Red, indicating that optical slave mode is active.

3. Turn the Mode Selector Switch until the desired power level

is reached.

* TTL, AF or red-eye-reduction pre-flashes will cause the flash to

fire out of sync. Turn these camera features off.

Triggering with Wireless Triggers or Sync Cables

The PPL-200 has a 3.5 mm Sync Port. Wireless flash triggers or

sync cables can be connected to this port using the proper cables.

Using the Optical Slave

The PPL-200 has a built-in Optical Slave. To trigger the strobe

using the optical slave press the Optical Slave On/Off Switch. The

Optical Slave Mode Light will turn Red, indicating that optical

slave mode is active.

* TTL, AF or red-eye-reduction pre-flashes will cause the flash to

fire out of sync. Turn these camera features off.

Turning Sound On/Off

The PPL-200 makes an indicator sound as the Mode Selector

Switch is pressed or turned. It also makes a sound when the

strobe has finished recharging and is ready to fire.

To turn sound on/off

1. Press the Mode Selector Switch until the LCD is blank except

for the top row of icons.

2. Turn the Mode Selector Switch to change the sounds icons to

On or Off.

Using the battery with Hot Shoe Flashes

The PPL-200 battery can also be used to power one or two Canon

or Nikon hot shoe flashes. Brands can be mixed and match if the

correct cables are used. To attach:

1. Insert AA batteries into a compatible flash unit. The flash will

not function without AA batteries.

2. Connect a compatible flash power cord to the battery and flash.

3. Turn on the flash and set mode/power.

Recharging the battery

1. Plug the charging cable into the port on the bottom of the battery.

2. Plug the other end of the cable into a mains outlet.

3. The LED on the converter section of the charging cable with

light Red when charging and green when finished.

Warnings

1. Never disassemble or modify the PPL-200. The voltage inside the

strobe is extremely dangerous.

2. Never use the PPL-200 in high humidity or wet conditions/areas.

3. Never use the PPL-200 in the presence of volatile oils, thinners,

dust, or flammable gas and chemicals.

4. Make sure the power cord is securely connected to the battery

and strobe.

5. Turn off the battery power switch and strobe power switch

before removing the power cable.

6. Store the PPL-200 at normal room temperature. Storing in a cold

area may affect performance.
