Adjustment of Lifters

S&S Pushrod Instruction Sheet No. 5000 provides different directions
for adjusting lifters that have been installed “dry,” and lifters that have
been operated before and/or contain oil. S&S now recommends that
S&S pushrods be adjusted as follows, regardless of whether lifter
contains oil or is dry.

1. Rotate engine to place lifter at lowest point on cam lobe.

2. Lengthen adjuster to take up slack until pushrod spins freely,

but has no up and down movement. This is position of “zero
lash.”

3. From zero lash, extend pushrod adjuster number of turns

specified by pushrod manufacturer. Turn S&S adjuster and
other brand adjusters with 32 threads per inch 4 complete turns,
then tighten locknut against adjuster.

NOTE - Do not rotate engine until lifter has bled down and pushrod
spins freely.

CAUTION - Rotating engine before lifter bleeds down can damage
pushrods and valves.

4. After pushrod spins freely, rotate engine to place each of

remaining lifters at lowest point and repeat adjustment
procedure.
