REPAIR

TRACTION DRIVE BELT REMOVAL/
INSPECTION/INSTALLATION

NOTE: If drive belt is in good condition, it doesn’t have

to be completely removed to take out the
transaxle. Follow Removal Steps 1—4 below,
then remove belt from transaxle drive sheave.

Removal—

1. Park tractor on level surface and remove battery.
2. Remove mower deck.
3. Safely raise and block tractor to gain easy access

to underside of frame.

4. Pull larger tensioning idler (F) rearward until belt (I)

can be removed from adjustable idler (H), larger
tensioning idler (F), and transaxle drive sheave (G).

5. Remove park brake lever (D) from locking rod.
6. Disconnect both steering rods (E and K) from

steering yoke and swing them out-of-the-way.

7. Disconnect PTO clutch wiring harness connector

(A).

8. Hold PTO clutch mounting washer (M) stationary

with a large open-end wrench while you remove
mounting cap screw (L).

9. Remove PTO clutch assembly (N) and engine

crankshaft coupler (C).

10. Remove belt (I) from engine drive sheave (B) and

remove sheave from crankshaft.

11. Remove belt from tractor.

Inspection—

1. Inspect drive belt.

2. Replace belt as necessary.

Installation—

1. Install drive belt in reverse order of removal.
2. Coat mating surfaces of engine crankshaft OD, ID

of traction drive sheave (B), ID of PTO clutch
coupler (C), and ID of PTO clutch (N) with John
Deere Never-Seez® before installation. (Hint: hold
sheave in place by seating drive belt in sheave
groove.)

3. BE SURE to align anchor slot (P) of PTO clutch

assembly with vertical rod (O) of frame weldment
belt guide.

4. Tighten PTO clutch cap screw (L) to specification.

Use flats of washer (M) to hold crankshaft still.

Specification:

PTO clutch cap screw . . . . . . . . . . 75 N•m (55 lb-ft)

CAUTION

Tensioning spring (J) is under high tension.
Wear gloves and use a firm grip when stretching
spring.
