Users Instructions (Provisional)

HB3300-01

The Acetone Vaporiser is specifically designed for

the rapid and permanent mounting of the

membrane filters used for sampling and analysing

asbestos fibres. The unit is compact and portable

for site or laboratory use and takes just two

minutes to reach operating temperature.

The instrument utilises a very small

amount of acetone and takes just five seconds to

mount each filter. The simple and fast operation

allows it to be transported to site to reduce the

time taken to obtain results from asbestos

removal operations. The use of this type of

instrument is documented in Methods for

Determination of Hazardous Substances (MDHS)

39 &100, “Asbestos fibres in air”, published by

the Health and Safety Executive in the UK. The

document also covers sampling of asbestos and

may have equivalents under local health and

safety rules.

The instrument uses the Acetone - Triacetin, hot block method. If using the Acetone Vaporiser

for the first time, practise by using unused or discarded filters to gain proficiency.

WARNING

Acetone is highly flammable, do not breathe vapour, do not smoke, keep away from

sources of ignition, use only in a well ventilated area, miscible with water.

Sequence of Operations.

1.

Plug into mains power.

The unit operates on 240 V, or 110 V a.c. depending which model has been ordered.

The amber neon lamp is lit, indicating power on.

After approximately one minute the green neon lamp will light, indicating that the unit is ready

for use.

N.B. The green neon lamp will alternate between being lit and off. This is normal, and the unit

can be used in this mode.

2.

Place a glass slide and filter on to the slide platform.

The slide platform can be adjusted, allowing the distance from vapour outlet to be set by the

user.

3.

Draw approximately 0.3 - 0.4 ml of Acetone into the syringe.

4.

Insert the syringe into the hole in the top plate.

5.

Inject the Acetone at a slow steady rate whilst holding the syringe firmly in place.

6.

After vapour discharge has occurred, remove the syringe.

7.

Withdraw the glass slide from the platform.

The filter should now be clear. If not, or it is only partially cleared, repeat steps 3 to 6.

8.

Wait a few minutes for the Acetone to evaporate.

9,

Using a micro pipette or dropper to apply a drop of Triacetin to the centre of the cleared filter.

10.

Cover the filter with a cover slip.

11.

Place the slide on to the heater pad and leave for approx. ten minutes.

The filter can now be analysed / counted.

WARNING

Beware of the following parts which will be hot to the touch: Outlet tube and the

heater pad.
