Automatic Operation

Automatic Operation

All operational commands related to actual control of the tape library are entered
through an ACSLS library server or an SMM Workstation.

If a tape volume physically resides in the tape library, $ZSVR automatically sends a
request to the tape library control software to mount the tape volume on a tape drive
(either specified by the user in the DEFINE, by default, or provided by DSM/TC). In
most circumstances, no operator intervention is required.

Mount Requests

If a requested tape volume does not physically reside in the tape library, the operator
must respond to a mount request. The operator must then use the SMM GUI or
appropriate ACSLS commands or MEDIACOM commands to satisfy the request.

To respond to a mount request, the operator must do one of the following:

Use the MEDIACOM ALTER TAPEMOUNT command to select another tape
volume that does reside in the tape library.

Enter the requested tape volume into the tape library and then use the SMM GUI
or appropriate ACSLS commands to mount the tape volume into the tape drive.

Control Path Flow Description

1. The application opens the TAPE DEFINE or TAPECATALOG DEFINE:

BACKUP =DEF,$SYSTEM.*.*,LISTALL, BLOCKSIZE 28,...

FUP COPY file,=DEF,...

TMFCOM DUMP FILES $DATA1.*.*, BLOCKSIZE 28,...

2. The file system forwards the request to $ZSVR for processing. (If the tape

cartridge is premounted in a tape drive, skip to Step 8.)

3. The NonStop server does not store information on whether a tape volume resides

in the tape library. Instead, each time a tape volume is requested, $ZSVR checks if
it is currently in the tape library. $ZSVR sends a message to confirm the existence
of the specified tape cartridge in the tape library, including its physical location. The
system does one of the following:

If the tape cartridge is in the tape library, and a tape drive was specified or a
free tape drive can be found in the same tape library, go to Step 5.

A mount message is sent to the EMS log, and $ZSVR waits for the tape
cartridge to be mounted before proceeding:

If the tape volume requested is not in the tape library.

If the AUTOMATED option is ON and a TMF or DSM/TC scratch tape
requests a tape volume that does not reside in the tape library, and after
