Adding Preexisting Tape Files

To manually catalog a tape file from a tape created by BACKUP, BACKCOPY, or other
processes, use the ADD TAPEFILE command. BACKCOPY is a standard Backup
Restore utility. The tape must belong to a pool and volume catalog before you execute
ADD TAPEFILE. Otherwise, you must add it to a pool using the ADD TAPEVOLUME
command, specifying the tape’s status as scratch. As it adds the tape to the file
catalog, ADD TAPEFILE changes the tape’s status to ASSIGNED in the volume
catalog.

You cannot use ADD TAPEVOLUME to add the second or subsequent pre-existing
tape files on an appended backup volume set.

Examples

To catalog an existing tape file created before DSM/TC was installed:

MC> ADD TAPEFILE, MODE USER, EXPIRATION JAN 30 2003,
TAPEDRIVE $TAPE

Information from the tape’s label is combined with the new expiration date and the
default values of the command’s options to create the tape file entry. ADD
TAPEFILE also changes the tape status to ASSIGNED in the volume catalog.

The cataloged tape file FIRST_QTR_01_SUMMARY_DATA expired in the catalog
on February 1, 2001. However, it should remain cataloged for another six months.
On February 2, to recatalog it and give it a longer retention period:

MC> ADD TAPEFILE FIRST_QTR_01_SUMMARY_DATA,&

>>> MODE USER,&

>>> EXPIRATION AUG 01 2001,&

>>> TAPEDRIVE $TAPE

ADD TAPEFILE catalogs the tape file only if the rightmost 17 characters of

tape-

file-id

(R_01_SUMMARY_DATA) match the characters in the tape’s label.

To catalog an existing backup tape created before DSM/TC was installed:

MC> ADD TAPEFILE MONDAY_BACKUP,&

>>> MODE BACKFILE,&

>>> EXPIRATION AUG 01 2001,&

>>> TAPEDRIVE $TAPE

Information from the tape’s label is combined with the new expiration date and the
default values of the command’s options to create a tape file entry. No disk file
entries are made.

To catalog the disk files along with the tape file name, use the BACKCOPY utility to
copy the tape and request that the tape file and disk files be cataloged using the
CATALOGFILES option. CATALOGFILES does not apply to Backup Restore 2.0
