Virtual Disk Configuration

Virtual Disk Configuration

To configure a virtual disk, use the PUP DEFINEVIRTDISK command to name the
virtual disk, identify the storage pool it is associated with, and define its configuration
attributes:

DEFINEVIRTDISK $MYVDISK, POOL $MYPOOL [attributes]

As in the case of storage pools, the name must map to an OSCONFIG virtual disk
process entry that exists or will exist.

To modify the attributes of a virtual disk, use the PUP REDEFINEVIRTDISK command.

To delete a virtual disk configuration, use the PUP DELETEVIRTDISK command to
delete information about the virtual disk from the $ZSMS catalog and the COUP
DELETE command to delete the OSCONFIG entry for the corresponding process.

Managing Storage Pools

To manage physical volumes associated with storage pools, use four pairs of PUP
commands:

There are restrictions on performing some operations on a physical disks configured in
a pool. The VDP maintains the name mapping between the logical file names and the
physical file name in its catalogs. If the physical disk name is changed, the VDP
catalog file entries become invalid as they are now pointing to the old nonexistent
physical disk. Following is a list of known operations that should NOT be done on
physical disks in a pool:

Renaming the volume to an alternate name

Loading from different configurations where the physical volume names differ
between the configurations

Physically swapping two disks

INCLUDE
EXCLUDE

Associates a physical volume in a storage pool or removes it
from a storage pool.

SOLATE
DEISOLATE

Makes a physical volume associated with a storage pool
unavailable or reavailable for use; when a volume is isolated,
it is unavailable for file placement.

QUARANTINE
DEQUARANTINE

Makes a physical volume associated with a storage pool
unavailable or reavailable for use; when a volume is
quarantined, SMF does not use it to process a file placement
command unless the command explicitly requests the volume
using a PHYSVOL specifier.

ALLOWOPENS
STOPOPENS

Allows or denies new file open requests on physical volumes
associated with a storage pool.
