1 About Compatible FlashCopy

This chapter provides an overview of Compatible FlashCopy operations on the HP XP7 Storage
system.

About Compatible FlashCopy

The HP XP7 Storage is functionally compatible with the IBM FlashCopy V2 and IBM FlashCopy SE
host control functions. Once the Compatible FlashCopy features are enabled, you can perform
FlashCopy operations on the HP XP7 Storage by issuing PPRC TSO, DFSMSdss, ICKDSF, or
ANTRQST Macro commands from the host, and you can monitor FlashCopy operations from
Remote Web Console (RWC) as well as from Business Continuity Manager (BCM) and the various
PPRC command options.

Compatible FlashCopy delivers FlashCopy V2 data mirroring compatibility and interoperability
for the HP XP7 Storage. Compatible FlashCopy provides dataset-level copy functionality and
enables unattended point-in-time, full-volume, mirror-based data backup under a FlashCopy operating
environment.

Compatible FlashCopy SE (FCSE) provides a in-system solution for data protection that is IBM
mainframe compatible. It combines snapshots and virtual data management to create logical
point-in-time (PiT) copies. Once a source-target volume relationship is established, Compatible
FlashCopy SE uses thin-provisioned storage capacity that is allocated and used only when a change
occurs in the source volume. As backup copies are made to the target volume, storage resources
are consumed only on an as-needed basis, depending on the amount of changed data, resulting
in lower overall storage costs compared with full-volume physical mirroring.

The following Compatible FlashCopy operations are performed from Remote Web Console. All
other operations are performed from the mainframe host.

Note that displaying the Compatible FlashCopy relationship history is unique to Remote Web
Console. Compatible FlashCopy can be monitored using BCM and other host commands as
well as RWC. BCM can be used only to monitor the existence of relationships and cannot be
used to control FlashCopy operations.

Compatibility between Compatible FlashCopy and mainframe user interface
functions

The following table shows the compatibility between the Compatible FlashCopy functions and the
mainframe user interface functions, including TSO, DFSMSdss, ICKDSF, and ANTRQST Macro.
