Section 5: Messaging

This section describes how to send and receive different
types of messages. It also includes the features and
functionality associated with messaging.

Types of Messages

Your phone provides the following message types:

Text Messages

Multimedia (Picture, Video, and Audio) Messages

Email and Gmail Messages

Google+ Messages

Google Hangouts

The Short Message Service (SMS) lets you send and receive
text messages to and from other mobile phones or email
addresses. To use this feature, you may need to subscribe to
your service provider’s message service.

The Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) lets you send and
receive multimedia messages (such as picture, video, and
audio messages) to and from other mobile phones or email
addresses. To use this feature, you may need to subscribe to
your service provider’s multimedia message service.

Important! When creating a message, adding an image, a

sound file, or a video clip to a text message
changes the message from a text message to a
multimedia message.

New Messages Notification

Depending on your notification settings, the phone will play a
ringtone, vibrate, or display the message briefly in the Status
bar when you receive a new message. To change the
notification for new messages, see “Messaging Settings” on
page 51 f
or details.

A new message icon

also appears in the notifications

area of the Status bar to notify you of a new message. The
Messaging application icon

also displays the number of

new messages.

To open the message, touch and hold the Status bar, and
then slide the Status Bar down to open the Notifications
panel. Touch the new message to open and read it. For
information on reading and replying to messages see
“Managing Messages” on page 49.
