If the computer won’t turn on or start up
m Make sure the power adapter is plugged into the computer and into a functioning
power outlet.
m If you are using a power adapter other than the one that came with your computer, make
sure it is a 65 W Apple Portable Power Adapter.
m Your battery may need to be recharged. Press the small button on the battery (see
page 53). You should see one to five lights indicating the battery’s level of charge.
m If that does not work, press the Power button (®) and immediately hold down the
Command (x), Option, P, and R keys until you hear the startup sound a second time.
m If you recently installed additional memory, make sure that it is correctly installed and
that it is compatible with your computer. See whether removing it allows the computer to
start up (see page 65).
m If you are still unable to start up your computer, see the service and support information
that came with your PowerBook for information on contacting Apple for service.
If the display suddenly goes black or if your system freezes while you
are working
You will need to restart your system.
1 Unplug any devices that are connected to your PowerBook; don’t unplug the power adapter.
2 Hold down the Command (x) and Control keys and press the Power button (®) to restart
the system.
3 Let the battery charge to at least 10 percent before plugging in any external devices and
resuming your work. To see how much the battery has recharged, look at the battery status
icon in the menu bar.
Restoring Your Computer’s Software
Use the software installer disc that came with your computer to install Mac OS X,
applications, and Classic support.
Installing Mac OS X
1 Back up essential files, if possible.
2 Insert the software installer disc that came with your computer.
3 Double-click the Install Mac OS X icon.
4 Follow the onscreen instructions.
5 After selecting the destination disk for installation, click Options and continue following the
onscreen instructions.
