Listening to the sound
from the connected
optional components

Connect the AUDIO IN jack of this player with the
line output jack or headphones jack of the optional
component (ex: portable music players) using the stereo
audio connecting cable.

Press AUDIO IN.

The

AUDIO IN indicator lights up.

Play the optional component connected to the AUDIO
IN
jack of this player.

Adjust VOLUME.

• To turn off the AUDIO IN, press x

OFF.

Note
Connect the cable firmly to avoid any malfunction.

Setting the Alarm

This unit is equipped with 3 alarm modes—CD, RADIO and
buzzer. Before setting the alarm, make sure to set the clock (see
“Setting the Clock”). This unit is also equipped with a dual alarm
function. You can set the alarm for two different times ALARM A
and ALARM B.

To set the Alarm time

If you will select the CD alarm or RADIO alarm, adjust
the volume.
Also, if you will select the RADIO alarm, tune in to the
desired station.

Set the ALARM MODE selector to CD, RADIO or
BUZZER. The ALARM A or B indicator lights up.

Press ALARM A or B for a few seconds.
The

ALARM A or B indicator flashes, depending on

which one you set.

The hour will start to flash in the display.

Press TIME SET + or until the desired hour appears.

To set the hour rapidly, hold down

TIME SET + or .

Press ALARM A or B.

The minute will flash.

Repeat step 4 to set the minute and press ALARM A
or B.

The wake-up track number flashes on the display.

IF you selected the CD alarm, press > or . to
select the desired wake-up track number.

The wake-up track number can be set up to 99. Its default
value is “01”.

Press ALARM A or B.

The

ALARM A or B indicator lights up.

For the CD alarm, the track you specified as the Wake-up track is
played first.

To check the Alarm time

Press ALARM A or B. The display shows the alarm time.

If you press

ALARM A or B again, the indication changes to the

wake-up track number.
After a few seconds, the display returns to the current time.
• Alarm time in CD alarm, radio alarm and buzzer alarm is set

at PM 12:00 when you purchased the unit.

ALARM ON

For the CD alarm, the track you specified as the Wake-
up track is played first.

If you set the CD alarm when there is no disc in the CD player or
the CD compartment lid is open, the buzzer alarm will sound at the
set time.

For the radio alarm, the station that the tuning dial is set
to will be received.

For the buzzer alarm, the beeping of the alarm becomes
more rapid after every few seconds in three progressive
stages.

Note
When ALARM A and ALARM B are set for the same time, only
ALARM A will result.

To doze for a few more minutes

Press SNOOZE/SLEEP OFF.

The CD, radio or buzzer alarm turns off but will be automatically
activated again after about 10 minutes. Every time you press
SNOOZE/SLEEP OFF, the snooze time changes as follows:

The display shows the snooze time for a few seconds and returns to
show the current time. When you press

SNOOZE/SLEEP OFF

after the current time appeared, the snooze time starts from 10
minutes again.
• The maximum length of the snooze time is 60 minutes.

ALARM OFF

The alarm is turned off automatically after 60 minutes.

To stop the Alarm

Press ALARM RESET to turn off the alarm.

The alarm will come on again at the same time the next day.

To deactivate the Alarm

Set the ALARM MODE selector to OFF. ALARM A
or ALARM B indicator goes off.

Setting the Sleep Timer

You can fall asleep to the CD, RADIO, or AUDIO IN using the
built-in sleep timer that turns off the CD, RADIO or AUDIO IN
automatically after a preset duration.

Press SLEEP during CD, RADIO, or AUDIO IN play.

You can set the Sleep Timer to durations of 90, 60, 30, or 15
minutes. Every push changes the display as follows:

The CD, RADIO, or AUDIO IN will play for the time you set, then
turn off.
• To turn off the CD, RADIO or AUDIO IN before the preset

time, press

SNOOZE/SLEEP OFF.

Note
Even if the Sleep Timer is set, it cannot turn off the power of
optional components connected to the

AUDIO IN jack of this player.

To use both the Sleep Timer and
the Alarm

You can fall asleep to the CD, RADIO or AUDIO IN and be
awakened by the CD, RADIO or buzzer alarm.

Set the alarm. (See “Setting the Alarm”.)

Set the Sleep Timer. (See “Setting the Sleep Timer”.)

Note
This unit cannot select the alarm in AUDIO IN.

Changing the
Brightness of the clock
display

Slide BRIGHTNESS

to select H(high), M(middle) or L(low) for

the display according to your preference.

Setting the clock

Plug in the unit.

The display will flash “12:00”.

Press CLOCK SET for a few seconds.

The hour will start to flash in the display.

Press TIME SET + or until the correct hour
appears in the display.

Press CLOCK SET once.

5

Repeat steps 3 and 4 to set the minute.

After setting the minute, press

CLOCK SET to start the

counting of the seconds.

• To set the current time rapidly, hold down

TIME SET + or .

• During PM hours, the indicator lights up.
• In step 5, when you press

CLOCK SET after the minute

setting to activate the clock, the seconds start counting from
zero.

Playing a CD

An 8 cm (3-inch) CD can be played without an adaptor.

Pull Z PULL OPEN to open the CD compartment
lid and place a disc.

Close the CD compartment lid.

Press CD u.

TRACK “01” appears in the display to indicate that track 1
of the CD is playing.
After you press

CD u, it takes about 10 seconds before

the music starts.
The indication in the display returns to the current time a
few seconds after the music starts.

Turn VOLUME to adjust the volume.

* AMS = Automatic Music Sensor
**These operations are possible during both play and

pause.

• During CD playback, every time you press

TRACK, the track

number appears in the display for a few seconds.

About CD-Rs/CD-RWs

This unit is compatible with CD-Rs/CD-RWs but playback
capability may vary depending on the quality of the disc,the
recording device and application software.

Music discs encoded with copyright
protection technologies

This product is designed to play back discs that conform to the
Compact Disc (CD) standard.
Recently, various music discs encoded with copyright protection
technologies are marketed by some record companies. Please be
aware that among those discs, there are some that do not conform to
the CD standard and may not be playable by this product.

To handle compact discs
Correct

Handle the disc by its edge.

Incorrect

Do not touch the surface.

Do not stick paper or tape nor write
anything on the surface.

Note on DualDiscs
A DualDisc is a two sided disc product which mates DVD recorded
material on one side with digital audio material on the other side.
However, since the audio material side does not conform to the
Compact Disc (CD) standard, playback on this product is not
guaranteed.

Notes
• Discs with non-standard shapes (e.g., heart, square, star)

cannot be played on this unit. Attempting to do so may
damage the unit. Do not use such discs.

• If you press CD u when there is no disc in the CD

compartment, “00” flashes for a few seconds on the display
and the unit turns off automatically.

Playing the radio

Press RADIO ON to turn on the radio.

On” appears in the display.

Select BAND.

Tune in a station using the TUNING dial.

• To turn off the radio, press x

• This model does not support FM stereo.

Improving the
reception

FM: The AC power cord functions as an FM antenna.

Extend the AC power cord fully to improve FM reception.

AM: Rotate the unit horizontally for optimum reception. A

ferrite bar antenna is built into the unit.

Do not operate the unit over a steel desk or metal surface, as this
may lead to interference of reception.

Precautions

• Operate the unit on the power source specified in the

“Specifications.”

• The nameplate indicating operating voltage, etc. is located on

the bottom of the unit.

• To disconnect the AC power cord (mains lead), pull it out by

the plug, not the cord.

• Do not leave the unit in a location near a heat source such as a

radiator or air duct, or in a place subject to direct sunlight,
excessive dust, mechanical vibration, or shock.

• To reduce the risk of fire, do not cover the ventilation of the

apparatus with newspapers, tablecloths, curtains, etc. And do not
place lighted candles on the apparatus.

• Allow adequate air circulation to prevent internal heat build-up.

Do not place the unit on a surface (a rug, a blanket, etc.) or near
materials (a curtain) which might block the ventilation holes.

• Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, unplug the

unit and have it checked by a qualified personnel before
operating it any further.

• To clean the casing, use a soft cloth dampened with a mild

detergent solution.

If you have any questions or problems concerning

Troubleshooting

Should any problem persist after you have made the following
checks, consult your nearest Sony dealer.
The clock does not show the correct time.
• Has an electrical power outage occurred?
The CD, radio or buzzer alarm does not sound at the
preset alarm time.
• Is the

ALARM indicator light on?

The radio alarm is activated but no sound comes on at
the preset alarm time.
• Is the

TUNING dial set to a receivable radio station?

• Has

VOLUME been adjusted ?

The CD player does not operate.
• Did you close the CD lid?
• Did you place the disc correctly?

The disc should be placed with the labeled side up.

• Dusty or defective disc — Clean the disc with an optional

cleaning cloth. Wipe the disc from the center out.

• Take out the CD and leave the CD compartment open for

about an hour to remove moisture condensation.

Sporadic loss of sound in CD operation.
• Dusty or defective disc — Clean or replace the disc.
• Volume too high — Reduce the volume.
• Strong vibration.
There is no sound or sound output is low by pressing
the AUDIO IN button.
• Is the

AUDIO IN indicator light on?

• If the volume of the optional component is low, turn up the

volume on the component.

The radio gets interference.
• When used near electrical devices, move them away or turn off

their power.
