The eXplorist 300 has a built-in electronic compass that provides you with heading
information even when standing still. Heading information that is computed solely by GPS
signals requires that you be moving before it can be computed.

Notes about the electronic compass that you should be aware of:

• Recalibrate the compass every time you change batteries.

• Do not use the compass near large metallic objects. An example would be inside a

vehicle where the engine will interfere with the compass readings.

• The compass must be held relatively level to

operate correctly.

Note: When the eXplorist is held at an angle
that is too great for the electronic compass to
be accurate, a ‘

Hold Level’ warning will be

displayed.

• If the ‘

Hold Level’ warning is displayed even while the eXplorist is being held level or

you feel that it is too sensitive to minor tilting changes, try recalibrating the compass

• Compass Screen. With the electronic compass turned on, the needle displayed within

the compass will point to the North indicator on the compass when there is no active
route. The needle points to your destination when there is an active route.
