Information Bulletin

Bulletin Type: Service/Parts

Topic: Carrier to Housing Weep, Leak Repair Identification

Affected Models: D/R404 Family of Tandem Drive Axles

Carrier-to-housing leaks must be repaired because a loss of lubrication can ultimately cause the axle to fail due to a
burn-up. Weeps are caused by a few drops of lube escaping through either one of the fastener holes or through the
flange when the housing flexes under an extreme loading condition. The actual volume of lube that is lost is very
small and does not represent a threat to the integrity of the axle. Dana has created this Information Bulletin to assist
you in the diagnosis and the repair of a leaking or weeping carrier-to-housing joint. Refer to the general descriptions
and recommended repair procedures when preparing a warranty claim.
