SUBJECT: Output Shaft Snap Ring Installation Instructions for N340 and N400I Axles
Shown below are installations and a procedure for the proper installation of an output shaft snap ring
for N340 and N400I front drive axle assemblies. If the opening of the snap ring is not aligned with the
oil feed path of the bearing cage, oil flow to the output shaft bearings is significantly reduced. This can
shorten bearing life and cause premature bearing failures.
Snap Ring Installation Steps:
1. Install outer bearing cone.
2. Install snap ring with the proper pliers.
3. Rotate the snap ring so that the opening or gap is lined up with the oil feed path in the bearing cage (see drawing below).
4. Install output seal.
