SOIL SAMPLE PREPARATION

Remove the top 50mm (2") of soil. Break up and crumble the soil
underneath to a depth of approximately 120mm (5"). Remove any
stones or organic debris. Thoroughly wet the soil with water (ideally
rainwater) to the consistency of mud.

TESTER PREPARATION

Using the abrasive paper supplied, lightly shine 100mm (4") of the
main silver probe (avoiding the dark tip). Wipe clean using cotton wool
or tissue.

TAKING A pH READING

Push the probe into the moistened soil to a depth of approximately 4"
(100mm). Twist the tester between your fingers several times to
ensure that wet soil is well distributed over the surface of the probe.
Wait for one minute and note the reading.

CHECKING THE READING

If the reading is in the green zones remove the probe from the soil and
wipe any soil particles from the surface of the probe. Re-shine the
probe and re-insert into the soil at a different point. Twist the tester, as
before, and wait one minute before taking the final reading. If the read-
ing is in the orange/red zones remove the probe from the soil and wipe
any soil particles from the surface of the probe. Do not reshine the
probe, but re-insert into the soil at a different point. Twist the tester, as
before, and wait one minute before taking the final reading.

INTERPRETING THE READING

Check the final reading against the preference list below. Provided that
your reading falls within the range shown for the plant then no further
action is required. If the reading is from 4 to 7 the soil is acid - from 7
to 8 it is alkaline. To make your soil less acid/more alkaline apply
300g/m2 of ground limestone for every 1pH required. To make it more
acidic/less alkaline apply 70g/m2 of sulphate of ammonia.

TESTER CARE

The probe should not be left in the soil for any longer than is required
to take the reading. Always wipe the probe clean and dry with a soft
cloth or tissue after each reading.
