Environmental considerations

For successful installation and operation of the switch, ensure that the following environmental requirements are
met:

Because the Brocade VDX 6730 switches can be ordered with fans that move air either front to back or back to
front, be sure to orient your switch with the airflow pattern of any other devices in the rack. All equipment in the
rack should force air in the same direction to avoid intake of exhaust air.

A maximum of 90.1 cubic meters/hour (53 cubic feet/minute) for the Brocade VDX 6730-32 or 195.4 cubic
meters/hour (115 cubic feet/minute) for the Brocade VDX 6730-76 and a nominal flow of 59.5 cubic
meters/hour (35 cubic feet/minute) for the Brocade VDX 6730-32 or 129.1 cubic meters/hour (76 cubic
feet/minute) for the Brocade VDX 6730-76 of airflow is available to the air intake vents.

The ambient air temperature does not exceed 40

°

C (104

°

F) while the switch is operating.

Rack considerations

For successful installation and operation of the switch in a rack, ensure the following rack requirements are met:

The rack must be a standard EIA rack.

The rack space required is one or two rack units high depending on the switch ordered (1U for the Brocade VDX
6730-32 or 2U for the Brocade VDX 6730-76); 4.3 cm (1.7 in.) or 8.90 cm (3.50 in.) high and 42.9 cm (16.9 in.)
wide.

The equipment in the rack is grounded through a reliable branch circuit connection and maintains ground at all
times. Do not rely on a secondary connection to a branch circuit, such as a power strip.

Airflow and temperature requirements are met on an ongoing basis, particularly if the switch is installed in a
closed or multirack assembly.

The additional weight of the switch does not exceed the rack’s weight limits or unbalance the rack in any way.

The rack is secured to ensure stability in case of unexpected movement, such as an earthquake.
