LumaSHIELD Installation Guide: Optical Feedthrough

Purpose

These instructions are for installing the optical
feedthrough OFT-N38 on the tank wall plate FWP-N38.
Warning: The information supplied in this document is
for guidance only. Due to the variety of potential operat-
ing conditions and applications of the OFT-N38 product,
the user is fully responsible for the proper installation of
the product and for assuring that all performance, safety
and warning requirements are met.
The information supplied in this document should not
be construed as warranty. All implied warranties are
expressly disclaimed and in no event shall LumaSense be
liable for direct, indirect, special, incidental or consequen-
tial damages (including loss of profits) in connection with
installation and product performance.

Materials Required

PTFE pipe thread sealant (supplied by LumaSense)

11/16 inch torque wrench

Pre-Installation Notes

The OFT-N38 feedthrough has male tapered pipe
threads of 3/8-18 NPT size. Refer to ANSI/ASME
B1.20.1 standard for further information about NPT
threads dimensions, gauging and tolerances.

All parts must be clean and free of oils prior to instal-
lation.

Use the PTFE pipe thread sealant supplied by
LumaSense. Tapered pipe threads always need a
sealant to seal system fluids and reduce the potential
for galling of the threads. The seal is designed to
penetrate between the tapered threads.

Installation Procedure

Note: The protective caps of the fiber optic connectors
must remain in place during the installation.
1. Visually inspect the parts making sure that all threads

are clean and free of oils.

2. Apply the PTFE sealant (supplied by LumaSense) on

the male pipe threads of the OFT-N38 feedthrough
as shown on Figure 1 (Follow the application instruc-
tions indicated on the PTFE sealant tube).

Do not apply an excessive amount of sealant, just
enough to fill the threads as shown on Figure 2.

3. Connect the OFT-N38 feedthrough to the FWP-

N38 tank wall plate by first screwing the OFT-N38
feedthrough in until it is finger tight as shown on
Figure 3.

4. Using an 11/16’’ torque wrench, tighten the OFT-N38

to around 80 N-m (60 lbs-ft). Do not over tighten the
OFT-N38 feedthrough as damage could be caused
to the optical parts inside the feedthrough. Leakage
may also result if thread is damaged from over tight-
ening. It is normal that some thread still shows after
complete installation.

WARNING: DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE
FEEDTHROUGH.
