Select Options > Routing from the menu in
any guidance screen. In this screen CoPilot
gives you a variety of truck-specific routing
options.
Truck Routing Type:
CoPilot Truck’s Practical and Shortest route
types are based on ALK’s industry-standard
PC*MILER Practical routing, which models
the trade-off between taking the most direct

path and staying on major, high quality highways. Interstate highways are
given a higher priority than toll roads, which in turn are given a higher
priority than secondary highways, and so on. CoPilot’s Practical routings
consider distance, road quality, terrain, urban\rural classifications, truck-
restricted roads, and designated principal and secondary through routes.
Shortest routing travels the least distance where possible while maintaining
some level of practicality.
Practical or Shortest routing can be combined with any of the other CoPilot
routing options (described below, p. 51-53).
Restricted Roads:
This setting gives you a choice between Heavy Vehicle and Light Vehicle
routing. When Avoid is selected (this is the default setting), Heavy Vehicle
routing is in effect, so both truck-prohibited and truck-restricted roads will
always be avoided on routes that are calculated by CoPilot. In addition,
Heavy Vehicle routing takes nationwide 13’ 6" height restrictions into
account. A heavy vehicle is one weighing at least 80,000 pounds; a light
vehicle weighs less than 80,000 pounds.
Select Don’t Avoid to activate Light Vehicle routing. Light Vehicle routing
avoids truck-prohibited roads, but truck-restricted roads are considered for a
route. CoPilot Truck normally gives preference to Interstates, major
highways, and major thru-roads where possible.
Your guidance screen displays an indicator for the road restriction setting:
Hazmat Routing:
CoPilot Truck can calculate routes for hazardous materials based on over
twenty different road categories and four route options. Hazmat route
options include: General, Explosives (1.1-1.3), Inhalants, and Radioactive.
By default, Hazmat routing is turned off. On-screen indicators are:
When Hazmat routing is active, CoPilot will generate an on-screen alert on
prohibited roads. You must press OK to continue using CoPilot.
Note: Hazardous material routing restriction/designation data used in CoPilot Truck’s
Hazmat route calculations is based on data provided by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety
Administration (FMCSA) and various other state and federal sources.
Regardless of which restriction setting is chosen, CoPilot will display a
warning message if you turn onto a commercial-prohibited road. When
Heavy Vehicle routing is active (“Avoid” is selected), a warning message
will also pop up if you turn onto any truck-restricted road. You must press
OK to hide the alert and continue using CoPilot — these alerts never dis-
appear automatically.
