Because of its interrelationship with the Guardian environment, from a user standpoint Open System
Services can be viewed as:

An alternate interface to the NonStop operating system

A development environment for portable applications

An environment for porting applications to and from a NonStop system

Alternative to Guardian Interface

At the user and programmatic interface levels, Open System Services offers fully functional and
independent alternatives to the Guardian API and its utilities, file system, and command interpreter.

Interoperability

Open System Services makes use of many features of the NonStop operating system, including
fault tolerance, parallel processing, data integrity and reliability, distributed data, and linear
expandability.

Open System Services makes direct use of important HP software, such as the Safeguard,HP
NonStop TCP/IP, and TELNET applications.

The OSS and Guardian environments can interoperate on both user and programmatic levels. For
example, many OSS functions and user commands can be executed against files and other objects
in the Guardian environment; conversely, some Guardian procedures can be executed against
OSS objects.

OSS programs always execute as OSS processes under control of the NonStop operating system.

Application Development

The OSS environment enables portable applications to easily run on the NonStop system and take
advantage of HP features. It gives developers an environment in which to develop and test new
portable applications.

For many portable applications, you can write, edit, and pretest code on your workstation and
then compile, debug, and perform final testing in the OSS environment.
