Note that the Top N set may change in the next interval, and the graph may look
completely different after refresh. To select a different metric, use the Metric
dropdown menu. However, the top N objects are always selected based on the
first metric. Therefore, choosing a different metric will cause this metric to be
graphed, but the objects shown on the graph will be the top N objects with
respect to the first metric. For this reason it is probably best to select the objects
to graph in the “Only” list when using an alternate metric rather than viewing the
top N.

5.4. Alerts and Notifications

Performance Essentials provides the user with the ability to set user-defined threshold
notification schemes and alerts. Initially, the PE SIM plug-in defaults to its own set of
thresholds for CPU and Process that are based on observed behavior in industry. These
thresholds determine the severity level of the performance entity status icon displayed
in the performance trees and tables. Once the user creates a threshold, the status icon
assumes the most severe active status whether it follows a pre-defined threshold or a
user-defined threshold.

In addition to creating thresholds, the user has the ability to set alerts and the option of
logging the threshold. If alerts are set, once the user-defined thresholds are met, alerts
are sent to the user in the preferred manner of an email and/or SMS text. The threshold
will also be logged if the user has selected the checkbox “Console” under Method of
Notification Settings.

It is important to note that no alerts will be sent out via email or SMS text unless the
SIM configurations settings have been set correctly. These settings can be reached from
the top HP SIM menu via Configure -> NonStop Cluster Essentials -> PE

Configurations Management…

and selecting the SIM tab from the left side panel. All

fields must be set and depending on the mail server’s settings, the Use SSL checkbox
may have to be selected for the alert notifications to work. By default, Use SSL is NOT
enabled. Note that the emails and SMS text will be sent from the SMTP user name
specified by the user. The figure below is the configuration settings for SIM. Note the
form of the SMTP Host and SMTP User Name. It is important that these are filled in
correctly.
