NonStop S-Series Service Provider Supplement.

9840 Tape Cartridges

Currently, there are two types of 9840 tape cartridges. The standard and the
VolSafe cartridge:

The standard cartridge uses white labels and can be write protected. If not
write protected, data can be written over.

The VolSafe cartridge uses yellow labels and cannot be written over. Data
can only be appended to the information on the cartridge.

The tape cartridges have one supply and one take-up reel. The design allows
for mid-point loading and provides an average access-to-data time of 11
seconds. The dual-hub architecture yields a load/initialize time of 4 seconds.

Table 1-7

shows the characteristics of the standard and VolSafe cartridges.

Note. Do not use a VolSafe tape to make a dump, code, or data tape. A “Write Prot” message
appears if you use a VolSafe tape.
