Task: Delegating rule authorization for operators

You can authorize users, who perform the role of an operator, to run certain required rules using
the Data Center Power Control facility.

To authorize an operator to run a rule:
1.

From the New Rule or Edit Rule section of the Data Center Power Control Rules page, click
Permissions. The Permissions section appears at the bottom of the New Rule or Edit Rule section
of the Data Center Power Control Rules page.

2.

Select the operator name from the Other users column and click to move it into the Users with
explicit permission to run the rule column to add permission to the user for this rule. You can
also include permission for more than one user for a rule.

3.

Click Save Permissions to save the changes. The operator is authorized to run the required
rules.

4.

The operator must also be authorized for the DCPC tool for each possible target of a rule
through the Monitor Tools toolbox or a Custom Toolbox that includes the DCPC tool. The
administrator (with authorization to configure Central Management Server security) must
establish this through Options

→Security→Users and Authorizations.

Task: Notification of Power Management Events

Insight Control power management alerts are distributed as Systems Insight Manager events
attributed to specific devices. This capability enables you to be notified of power/cooling issues
that may arise from the following:

New hardware attached to a PDU but not configured in Systems Insight Manager

New potential overload conditions precipitated by addition of new hardware

Loss of power/thermal data collection due to changes in credentials on an iLO/OA

Configuration changes that may have removed a previous power cap required to stay within
a power/cooling constraint

For automatic notification of power management events, you may use the Automatic Event Handling
capability of Systems Insight Manager to route the event to the destination of your choice, such as
send a page, email, execute a custom CMS tool, assign to a specific user, generate an SNMP
trap, or system log.

Systems Insight Manager selects the specific event types and the systems for which to activate
automatic event handling.

Task: Limiting the power consumption in the data center during events

Data Center Power Control provides the ability to define the goal of expected power consumption
for a set of systems in response to the data center events and conditionally stop the rule execution
when the expected power consumption goal is achieved through the Conditionally stop rule
execution feature. You can use this feature for the following data center events:

Power event—when you may need to use the limited power available

Cooling event—when one of the chillers cooling a zone in a data center fails and you need
to reduce the power consumption to use the available cooling effectively

DR event—when you may need to reduce the power consumption to a certain limit based on
the request from an utility company

For these events, you can set the parameters of the Conditionally stop rule execution feature, such
as operational power, calibrated maximum power, and minimum power, to the desired values
and set to act on the selected systems or devices.
