XP Continuous Access S-VOLs cannot be accessed by a UNIX/PC server host except when the pair
is split.

XP Thin Provisioning

The virtual volume of Thin Provisioning (TP-VOL) can be assigned to XP Continuous Access
Synchronous pairs, provided that both primary and secondary volume are the TP-VOLs.

To use the TP-VOLs that are also used by an XP Business Copy pair or an XP Auto LUN migration
plan, perform the following steps. For more information on using XP Auto LUN Software, see the
HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000 Auto LUN Software User Guide.

1.

Release the XP Business Copy pair and disable the XP Auto LUN setting.

2.

Create the XP Continuous Access Synchronous pair. Re-create the XP Business Copy pair, and
the XP Auto LUN migration plan if needed.

When you specify the TP-VOL that has the allocated pages to the S-VOL of the XP Continuous
Access Synchronous pair, be aware of the following:

The used pool capacity is temporarily larger than the actual used capacity because pages
must be reallocated in the TP-VOL.

Before you create the pair, make sure that the TP-VOL pool capacity is large enough.

Before you create the pair, make sure that the Pool-VOLs, that are added to a pool, are not
blocked. If the Pool-VOLs are blocked, restore the volume status, then create the pair.

Performance Monitor

Performance Monitor software provides detailed information on the I/O activity and hardware
performance of the storage systems. Performance Monitor can be used to monitor the storage
systems that will be (or already are) performing XP Continuous Access operations. The storage
system usage and performance data collected and displayed by Performance Monitor enables
you to:

Identify the optimum timings to perform XP Continuous Access data duplexing operations (for
example, during periods of light system I/O activity),

Determine the best locations for the XP Continuous Access S-VOLs (for example, in parity
groups with less frequently accessed volumes to avoid bottlenecks of backend activity),

Monitor storage system performance during XP Continuous Access operations and during
testing activities.

Performance Monitor data collection does not affect storage system operations in any way. However,
Performance Monitor data collection can cause a significant amount of traffic on the storage system
internal LAN, especially when Performance Monitor is collecting a large amount of LDEV data. To
prevent timeouts from occurring while you are performing XP Continuous Access (or other) operations
on the Remote Web Console computer, you may want to decrease the Performance Monitor data
collection activities before using the other storage system program products. This reduces the
storage system's internal LAN traffic, so that inquiries and commands issued by the Remote Web
Console computer can be processed more quickly.

For further information on Performance Monitor, see the HP StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000
Performance Monitor User's Guide
.

data for one or more storage systems on the same storage system internal LAN:
