Troubleshooting 162

11-3-1 Checking the Device Manager Agent Error Log

For message text of the error message such as KARF15000-E indicating that an error occurred in the Device
Manager agent, a message ID is not attached. In such a case, you need to view the Device Manager agent
error log (error.log) to identify the message ID.

In accordance with a prefix of the identified message ID, check the error cause and troubleshooting by viewing
one of the following:

When the prefix is KARF: See section

11-6

.

The error log (error.log) is stored in the following directory under the Device Manager agent’s installation
directory:

When the OS is Windows

®

: \agent\logs

When the OS is Solaris™, AIX

®

, Linux, or HP-UX: /agent/logs

A message ID can be identified by using the following procedure. If an error message is output by Device
Manager because of a problem on the host side, you must check the Device Manager agent error log
(error.log) to determine the error cause as explained below.

Among the logs inside the Device Manager agent error log (error.log), find a log that satisfies the following
two conditions:

The error occurrence time matches the time at which the problem occurred.

CAUTION:

The time at which an error was detected might conflict between the server and the agent.

Note that time lag might occur. Also note that times may be different due to standard/daylight time.

The message text matches the message text of the message that was output by the Device Manager
agent.

The message ID that you want to identify is shown in this log. The output format of the Device Manager agent
error log (error.log) is as follows:

error-occurrence-time identifier message-ID message-text

The output items are explained below.

error-occurrence-time: The time at which the error occurred is displayed in the following
format: day/month/year: hour:minute:second difference-from-GMT/UT

Identifier: This indicates the program being executed. When an error occurred during the Provisioning
Manager processing, HPVM is displayed.

message-ID: A message number with a prefix indicating a program. For Provisioning Manager, the prefix
is KARF. For Device Manager, the prefix is KAIC.

message-text: Describes the details of the error that has occurred.

An output example follows:

12/7/2004:14:25:37 0900 HPVM KARF66006-E The specified raw devices do not exist.

11-3-2 Collecting Error Information

This section explains how to use the error information batch collection tools:

Batch collection tool for server error information (cvxpaegetlogs)

Batch collection tool for host error information (TIC)

Batch collection tool for host information (HPVM_GetRAS)

11-3-2-1 Batch Collection Tool for Server Error Information (cvxpaegetlogs)

If an error occurs on a Provisioning Manager server, you can use the cvxpaegetlogs command of the
maintenance information batch collection tool (TIA: Trouble Information Acquisition) to collect the information
for analyzing the error. Collect this information, which covers log files and databases, from the server execution
environment of the Device Manager server.

NOTE:

To use TIA, you need to log on as a user who has Administrator or root access privilege.
