Components

To use XP Performance Control, you need:

The storage system

The Performance Monitor program products (Performance Monitor is required. XP Auto LUN is
optional.)

A WWW client computer connected to the storage system via LAN

To use XP Performance Control, you must use the WWW client computer to log on to the SVP. When
you are logged on, the HP StorageWorks Remote Web Console program, which is a Java application
program, will be downloaded to the WWW client computer. You can perform XP Performance Control
operations in the Remote Web Console window.

For details about requirements for WWW client computers, see the HP StorageWorks
XP24000/XP20000 Remote Web Console User Guide
.

CAUTION:

If Performance Monitor is not enabled, you cannot use XP Performance Control.

Performance management operations (Performance Monitor and XP Performance Control) involve
the collection of large amounts of monitoring data. This requires considerable web client computer
memory. It is therefore recommended that you exit the Remote Web Console program when not
conducting performance management operations, to release system memory.

Overview of XP Performance Control

When XP Performance Control is used, I/O operations from hosts requiring high performance are
given higher priority over I/O operations from other hosts.

Performance of High-Priority Hosts

In an SAN (storage area network) environment, the storage system is usually connected with multiple
host servers. Some types of host servers often require high performance, which others might not require
such high performance.

For example, production servers usually require high performance. Production servers, which include
database servers and application servers, are used to perform daily tasks of business organizations.
