This chapter provides an overview of the ShadowImage for Mainframe software for the HP XP disk
array:

“ShadowImage for Mainframe” (page 6)

“Business Benefits” (page 7)

“Feature Highlights” (page 7)

Unless otherwise specified, the terms XP disk array and storage system in this guide refer to the
following disk arrays:

HP StorageWorks XP24000 Disk Array

HP StorageWorks XP20000 Disk Array

The GUI illustrations in this guide were created using a Windows computer with the Internet Explorer
browser. Actual windows may differ depending on the operating system and browser used. GUI
contents also vary with licensed program products, storage system models, and firmware versions.

ShadowImage for Mainframe

ShadowImage for Mainframe software provides innovative, storage-based technology solutions
for enabling continuous business operations. By partnering with customers to understand key
business challenges and requirements, ShadowImage for Mainframe is able to deliver robust,
application-focused storage solutions that enhance operational efficiency and resilience.

An essential component of business continuity and risk mitigation strategies and optimized IT
operations is the ability to replicate data quickly for critical application processing, testing and
development of new applications, zero-downtime recovery, data migration, and necessary backup
operations. The high-speed nondisruptive local mirroring technology of ShadowImage for Mainframe
software rapidly creates multiple copies of mission-critical information within HP storage systems
in mainframe environments. (For equivalent functionality in open systems environments, see HP
StorageWorks XP24000/XP20000 Business Copy Software User's Guide
.) ShadowImage for
Mainframe keeps data RAID-protected and fully recoverable without affecting service or performance
levels. Replicated data volumes can be split from the host applications and used for system backups,
application testing, and data mining applications while business continues to run at full capacity.

ShadowImage for Mainframe provides heterogeneous replication between any storage systems
within a virtualized storage pool managed by the XP disk array. Data that resides on an externally
attached storage system can be moved from the source to a target data volume anywhere in the
storage pool, including to another externally attached system. Using ShadowImage for Mainframe,
you can migrate data volumes from one platform to another through the XP disk array and maximize
the use of your storage infrastructure. By providing nondisruptive, high-speed data replication
within any HP storage system or within the virtualized storage pool, ShadowImage for Mainframe
software enables immediate use of data in decision support, software testing and development,
and data protection operations.

ShadowImage for Mainframe is functionally compatible with the industry-standard IBM Peer-to-Peer
Remote Copy (PPRC) host software functions. PPRC TSO, PPRCOPY ICKDSF and/or HP
StorageWorks XP for Business Continuity Manager Software commands may be used to perform
ShadowImage for Mainframe operations on the HP disk array.

This document describes and provides instructions for performing ShadowImage for Mainframe
operations on the XP disk array using the ShadowImage for Mainframe software on HP
StorageWorks Remote Web Console and using PPRC TSO or PPRCOPY ICKDSF commands. The
licensed ShadowImage for Mainframe software displays the ShadowImage for Mainframe
information and allows you to perform ShadowImage for Mainframe operations. For further
