1 Overview

This guide is intended for system administrators who use the HP Virtual Connect Management Pack
and other HP applications and tools to manage HP Virtual Connect in a Microsoft System Center
environment. Users must be familiar with the configuration and operation of Microsoft Windows,
Microsoft Systems Center Operations Manager, and HP Virtual Connect Manager. Because of the
potential risk of data loss, only individuals who are experienced with using this software should
implement the procedures described in this guide.

This guide supplements the Microsoft System Center user documentation. Complete information on
supported hardware and software is included in the support matrix for HP OneView for Microsoft
System Center. For links to the support matrix and other product documentation, see

Introduction

The HP Virtual Connect Management Pack complements and extends Operations Manager by
adding alert processing, state monitoring, and hardware resource lifecycle management for HP
Virtual Connect logical and physical components. The management pack provides user discovery
of HP Virtual Connect, predefined views, monitors, event processing rules, and tasks. These features
enable administrators to streamline IT operations and ensure increased systems availability by
monitoring HP Virtual Connect hardware platforms through a common management console.

The HP Virtual Connect Management Pack features include user configuration, monitoring, and
automatic grouping of the HP Virtual Connect into a common view. Default monitoring highlights
the state of HP Virtual Connect hardware subsystems and components, and presents a consolidated
view of the enclosure status.

For advanced hardware lifecycle management and remote administration of HP Virtual Connect,
the HP Virtual Connect Management Pack includes a task that launches HP Virtual Connect Manager
advanced Virtual Connect administration.

Product operation

The HP Virtual Connect Management Pack performs the following tasks:

Identifies, groups, and displays HP Virtual Connect logical and physical components in the
management console

Populates Operations Manager with HP Virtual Connect domain attributes and configuration
data

Monitors and displays the state of HP Virtual Connect domain

Identifies, translates, and displays HP Virtual Connect domain events written to the Windows
Event Log as Operations Manager alerts

administration from Operations Manager

The HP Device Monitor Service (DMS) uses the information entered through the HP Device Monitor
Console (DMC) to connect to and monitor Virtual Connect components. If the connection succeeds,
the DMS continues to monitor the components for inventory, health state, and events.

After the HP Virtual Connect Management Pack is installed, the Operations Manager server transfers
the management pack to the Operations Manager Agent managed by the Operations Manager
server. The management pack discovers the DMS. When the discovery and monitor process
completes, HP Virtual Connect information is displayed on the management console.
