ApplicAtion

instructions

ApplicAtion instructions

1. Open the belt and center the back pad

across the mattress with the waist

strap toward the head of the bed.

The connecting strap will be located

underneath the back pad (fig. 1).

2. Position the patient in bed with the

belt at waist level.

3. Bring the belt around the patient’s

waist and secure with the lock. The belt must be snug, but

not interfere with breathing. To check for proper fit, slide an

open hand (flat) between the belt and the patient.

NOTE: If the strap does not pass easily through the locking

buckle, check to see if there is an obstruction in the lock, or

if the strap end is bent or curled. If the strap end is relatively

straight and the lock is unobstructed, try the following:

a. With the lock in the open position, gently push the strap

end into the lock until it meets resistance.

b. Push the lock latch down halfway (do not close all the

way). Repeat this action several times until the strap

feeds itself through the opening.

4. Lock the connecting straps on each side, to a movable part

of the bed frame, at waist level.

5. Check that the straps are secure and will not change

position, loosen, or tighten if the patient pulls on them, or if

the bed is adjusted.

TO UNLOCK:

1. Insert the Posey Key into the lock

and turn counterclockwise. This will

prevent jamming (fig. 2).

NOTE: Universal Posey Keys fit all

Posey locks. To order extra keys,

contact Posey at 1.800.447.6739,

press 5, and ask for Cat. #1074.

Before use, check device for damage. Discard if you

have any questions about patient safety.

BED SAFETY
• ALWAYS use Hospital Bed Safety

Workgroup (HBSW) (http://www.fda.

gov/cdrh/beds/modguide.html) compliant

side rails in the UP position and fill ALL

gaps to reduce the risk of entrapment.

• Use side rail covers and gap protectors to help prevent

the patient’s body from going under, around, through or

between the side rails. A failure to do so may result in

serious injury or death if a patient becomes suspended

or entrapped. Posey offers a full range of side rail pads

and/or gap protectors to cover gaps.

• Monitor per facility policy to ensure that the patient

cannot slide down, or fall off the mattress and become

suspended or entrapped (figs. 3 and 4).

• STOP USE AT ONCE: if the patient has a tendency to slide

forward or down in the device; or is able to self-release.

NOTE: A restraint with a pelvic piece will reduce the risk of

sliding, or of the patient pulling the device over his or her

head. See Posey

Catalog.

• Before leaving the patient, test the lock to make sure it is

locked. Posey Keys must be readily available to staff at all

times. This product can be cut off with scissors in an

emergency.
