Offering Broadband Everywhere

WiMAX: Turning Technology into Revenues

Today, consumers demand ubiquitous, always-on

broadband connectivity at low cost, anywhere they are.

Leveraging a wealth of experience in broadband and

wireless communication, and based on the latest IEEE

802.16e-2005 standards, Alcatel-Lucent’s WiMAX

offerings are the answer. No other offer in the industry

so effectively addresses high-end users needing seamless

broadband mobility with a single subscription and device,

while at the same time serving users in remote villages

in emerging economies that are eager to connect to

the telephone and the Internet for the first time.

From an operator standpoint, Universal WiMAX

(802.16e-2005 or Rev-e) is a flexible broadband access

technology that opens new market opportunities in:

High growth economies, where WiMAX can deliver

High-Speed Internet (HSI) access and telephony services

— via voice over IP (VoIP) — in rural and urban environ-

ments where copper is not available, and also can meet

the needs of high-end users in urban settings.

Mature Economies marked by high penetration of

telecom services, where WiMAX allows operators

to offer their customers advanced broadband services

(video, gaming, office access) “on the go” and help

address holes in broadband coverage.

WiMAX also offers new entrants an efficient way to

penetrate the telecom market and challenge incumbent

operators.

A wide variety of applications — fixed, nomadic

or mobile — can be run over WiMAX, addressing

the requirements of both fixed and mobile operators

as well as ISPs or new entrants.

Mobile Services

• High-Speed Internet browsing on the move

• Mobile VoIP

• Mobile office, push mail, mobile e-mail

• Mobile Virtual Private Networks (VPNs)

Vertical markets can also benefit from WiMAX

technology with applications in various environments

such as airports, seaports, railway stations, large enter-

prises, power utilities, oil platforms and more.

For example, transportation facilities can use WiMAX

to track luggage and goods, law enforcement and security

companies for rapid and flexible deployment of surveil-

lance equipment, utility companies for telemetry and data

communications.
