Chapter 7. Replacing hardware

Replacing the motherboard

Attention: Turn off the computer and wait 3 to 5 minutes to let it cool down before removing the cover.
Note: It may be helpful to place the computer face-down on a soft flat surface for this procedure. Lenovo
recommends that you use a blanket, towel, or other soft cloth to protect the computer screen from
scratches or other damage.

To replace the motherboard

Step 1. Remove any media (disks, CDs, or memory cards) from the drives, shut down the operating

system, and turn off the computer and all attached devices.

Step 2. Unplug all power cords from electrical outlets.

Step 3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer. This includes power cords, input/output (I/O)

cables, and any other cables that are connected to the computer. Refer to “Left and right view”and
“Rear view” for help with locating the various connectors.

Step 4. Remove the computer cover. Refer to “Replacing the side cover”.

Step 5. Remove the hard disk drive. Refer to “Replacing the hard disk drive”.

Step 6. Remove the top metal shield. Refer to “Replacing the top metal shield”.

Step 7. Remove the zigbee card. Refer to “Replacing the zigbee card”.

Step 8. Remove the Wi-fi card. Refer to “Replacing the Wi-fi card”.

Step 9. Remove the HDD cable - right angle type. Refer to “Replacing the HDD cable - right angle type”.

Step 10. Remove the bottom metal shield. Refer to “Replacing the bottom metal shield”.

Step 11. Remove the HDD cable - straight type. Refer to “HDD cable - straight type”

Step 12. Remove all the cables on the motherboard.

Step 13. Remove the six screws that secure the motherboard to the chassis.

Step 14. Slide the motherboard up then lift it out to remove it.
