SCC recommends chain tighteners
(sometimes known as chain spread-

ers) be used to take up additional slack. To
make this simpler, attach the first hook at
the “11 o’clock” position, the next at the “5
o’clock” postion and so forth. The open side
of the hooks must face away from the tire. No
further adjustment should be necessary.

Next fasten the outside fastener,
again making sure it is as tight as

possible. Drive a short distance and
retighten all fasteners. For best results,
make sure all connections are equal and as
tight as possible.

Reach behind the tire and engage
the inside connector making sure it

is as tight as possible. Then connect the
center (between the duals) fastener in the
same manner. See the illustration below for
a detailed look at this connection.

Drive forward a few feet, far enough-
so that two or three of the cross

chains pass under the tire.

Make sure the cross chain hooks
are facing upward. Hooks that face

down (towards the tire) will cause damage
to the tire.

Park vehicle on firm level ground,
and turn off the engine. Set the

parking brake. Lay the chains out flat on
the ground, making sure there are no
twists or tangles. Make sure the cross
chain hooks are facing upward. Drape the
chain over the tire, so that one cross chain
is postioned at the point where the tire
meets the ground.

Installation

Drive vehicle off highway to safe level ground. Turn off the
engine and set emergency brake. Unhook the chain tightener
and the outside fastener. Repeat procedure on inside fasten-
