EtherCAT combined with PROFIBUS

The "Controller-based Automation" system supports further bus systems in the optional mixed

operation in order to make it possible to integrate further field devices.
The EtherCAT bus system can be used in combination with PROFIBUS.
This is reasonable if ...

• not all field devices used are available for the same bus system, or
• a motion bus (EtherCAT) is required in parallel to the PROFIBUS.

EtherCAT (as motion bus) and PROFIBUS (as logic bus)

PROFIBUS (Logic)

PROFIBUS is recommendable for the following applications:

• Extension and control of system parts that have already been automated with PROFIBUS and

another control system.

• Use of field devices that are not supported by EtherCAT, CANopen and PROFINET.
• PROFIBUS combined as logic bus with EtherCAT as motion bus.

Note!

Controller c300/p300 do not support PROFIBUS communication.

The PROFIBUS bus system is commonly used for automation solutions.

Because it comes with the widest range of various field devices,

PROFIBUS is occasionally prioritised over more modern bus systems.

Due to the low bandwidth and synchronisation mechanisms, the

controllers only support logic functions when the PROFIBUS bus

system is used.
