Installation Instructions: Optional External Oil Returns

in S&S Cylinder Heads and Engines for Shovelheads

External oil returns are an available option for S&S

®

cylinder heads and engines for

shovels. When this option is specified, S&S plugs the stock style internal returns in each
cylinder head prior to assembly and machines new passages to accommodate

1

8

-27 NPT

fittings for external return.

Fittings are provided by S&S but must be installed by customer, who must also provide and
install the lines themselves. Return line from each cylinder head should be joined with tee
(not provided) approximately at level of crankcase. Third line must then be attached to
tee and routed to primary oil scavenge passage located between oil pump and center of
crankcase. See Picture 1.

INSTALLATION
1.

Gather required materials:
A. Two

each

-27 NPT drain hose fittings supplied with heads.

B.

Oil return fitting 31-2019 supplied in engine hardware package (H-D

C. Following items not supplied by S&S:

Sufficient high quality

” ID. fuel line to allow routing of return lines per

customer’s requirements and to avoid all hot surfaces.

Six each

” hose clamps.

” fuel line tee.

NOTE: Return lines must be free of kinks and other obstruction, and routed to avoid
contact with hot surfaces such as cylinder heads, cylinders, and exhaust pipes.

Obstructed oil return line may force oil into combustion chamber, causing engine to
run erratically or not at all. Obstructed oil return may also cause engine damage not
covered under warranty.

Oil return lines may melt if allowed to contact hot surface, resulting in deposit of
large amounts of oil on motorcycle.

Oil on brakes or tire may cause loss of control of motorcycle, resulting in serious
injury to rider and others.

2. Apply

Teflon

®

tape or thin coat of pipe sealant to threads of NPT cylinder head and

crankcase fittings. Install two

7

16

” fittings in cylinder heads,

1

2

” fitting in crankcase.

Avoid using excessive amount of tape or sealant which could obstruct oil passage.

Failure to install fittings properly may result in parts damage not covered under warranty.

3. Connect two oil drain lines to head fittings and route to tee. Secure connections with

hose clamps.

4. Route third line from tee to crankcase fitting and secure with clamps.
5. Start engine and observe for leaks.

NOTE: If external drains are later plugged and engine converted to stock style internal oil
return, plugs installed in original drains by S&S must be removed. For access, disassemble
valve springs for front and rear exhaust valves. Lower spring collars can then be removed,
and plugs removed with standard hex key. Oil line fittings in head and crankcase must be
removed and replaced with

1

8

-27 NPT plugs provided in packet with external drain fittings.

Plugs should be installed with Teflon

®

tape or pipe sealant.
