Cylinder Alignment & Oil Drain Dowels

Part #50-8023 and #93-1000

S&S

®

provides cylinder alignment dowels in

different designs and different
combinations of designs. The standard
dowel resembles a short section of straight,
thick-walled metal tubing. Other dowels
incorporate a flange and/or O-rings.

NOTE - Some S&S cylinders have one oil
drain hole and one blind hole, others have
two oil drain holes. When a combination
of straight and O-ring dowels is provided
with cylinder or head kit, O-ring dowel
always goes in oil drain hole. Straight
dowel goes in blind hole.

Determine which dowels you have and
read the following instructions before
proceeding.

Installation of Straight Dowel
#50-8023

1.

Inspect dowel for burrs. Remove if
necessary.

2.

Thoroughly clean dowel and dowel
hole with solvent such as carburetor or
electrical contact cleaner. Remove any
residue with clean, dry cloth.

Some solvents, degreasers and other
chemicals are harmful, especially to skin
and eyes. Many chemical compounds are
flammable and present a fire hazard. Read
the manufacturer’s instruction label for
proper use. Use in a well ventilated area
and wear protective clothing to avoid
personal injury.

3.

Insert dowel into hole, lightly tap
home if necessary.

4.

Apply two drops of wicking
adhesive sealant such as ND
Industries #1500-12-00352 to joint of
dowel-hole mating surfaces, one
drop directly across from the other.
Allow to seep into place for a few
moments. Remove excess sealant
from cylinder surface, using solvent
if necessary.

Cylinder and cylinder head gasket
surfaces must be clean and dry for
effective gasket seal.

5.

Allow remaining sealant to cure
according to manufacturer’s
instructions.

6.

Install O-ring supplied with head
gasket around dowel.

NOTE - Different head gaskets sometimes
have different thickness O-rings. Using
O-ring other than one provided with
head gasket may cause oil leak.

7.

Install other dowel according to
appropriate instructions and complete
cylinder head installation per
manufacturer’s instructions.

Installation of O-ring Dowel
#93-1000

Harley-Davidson

®

uses press fit alignment

dowels. To insure compatibility with
other manufacturer’s cylinder heads,
S&S

®

uses a looser fit. In some cases,

special O-ring dowels are supplied to
insure leak free operation. Installation of
O-ring dowels is straightforward using
following instructions.

1.

Inspect dowel and remove burrs if
necessary.

2.

Install provided O-rings in grooves on
dowel, taking care not to twist or
damage them.

NOTE - Twisted or damaged O-rings may
cause oil leak.

3.

Use deburring knife to chamfer oil
drain holes in front and rear cylinders
and cylinder heads. Desired angle is
30-45 degrees. Smooth chamfer with
fine emery cloth to remove sharp
edges. Avoid getting metal chips or
sanding debris in oil passages.

Metal chips or sanding debris in oil
passages may cause damage to engine
not covered under warranty.

4.

Lubricate O-rings with coat of light
grease or oil and tap gently into
cylinder oil drain hole, taking care not
to “shave” or otherwise damage o-
rings. Remove excess lubricant from
dowel and cylinder gasket surface.
Install dowel in other alignment hole
according to appropriate instructions.

NOTE - Some S&S drain dowels utilize
center flange instead of o-ring normally
provided with head gasket. Head gasket o-
ring should not be used with flanged
dowel unless otherwise specified.

5.

Apply very light film of Hylomar or
similar “thin,” heat-resistant sealant
around oil drain holes on both sides of
head gasket. Allow sealant to cure per
manufacturer’s instructions, then place
head gasket on cylinder.

NOTE - Some headgaskets provided by S&S
have metal “fire ring” in center. If fire ring
is wider on one side of gasket, wide side
goes up and faces cylinder head.

6.

Apply light coat of lubricant on dowel
O-ring, taking care not to contaminate
head gasket or metal gasket surfaces.

Oil or grease on cylinder head or gasket
surface may cause oil leak.

7.

Carefully align dowels, and lower
cylinder head onto cylinder. Avoid
twisting motion which may damage or
dislodge O-ring. Complete cylinder
head installation according to
manufacturer’s instructions.

NOTE - Install new dowel O-rings, S&S
P/N 50-8008, whenever cylinder heads
are removed from engine.

Failure to install new O-rings may cause
oil leak.
