PROCEDURE
FREE AVAIL ABLE CHLO RINE (F.A.C.)
Recommended Minimum Free Available Chlorine level in spa water and hot tubs is
3.0 - 5.0 ppm, and in pools 1.0 - 3.0 ppm.
1.
Fill a test tube (0106) to 5 mL line with the sample water.
2. Add one *Chlorine DPD #1R Tablet (6999A). Cap tube and mix
until tablet disintegrates.
3. Immediately insert test tube in the top of the Octa-Slide viewer. Slide
the DPD Chlorine Octa-Slide Bar (3416) into the viewer. Match the
sample color with chlorine standard.
4. Read the test result from the bar in ppm Free Available Chlorine. Do
not discard this sample if Total Residual Chlorine is to be determined.

Add one *Chlorine DPD #3R Tablet (6905A) to the test sample from
Step 4. Cap tube and mix until tablet disintegrates.
2. Insert test tube in Octa-Slide Viewer. Match with chlorine standard.
3. Read the test result from the color bar in ppm Total Residual
Chlorine.
COMBINED CHLORINE
Recommended Maximum Combined Chlorine level in spa water and hot tubs is 0.2
ppm.
To determine ppm Combined Chlorine, subtract the Free Available Chlorine
test result from the Total Residual Chlorine test result.
