The graduated cylinder (0455) furnished with this unit is marked at 50
and 58.3 mL. The equivalences for these sample sizes are as follows:

Sample Size

Each mL of Chloride Reagent B Equals

50 mL

10 parts per million (ppm) chloride

58.3 mL

0.5 grains per gallon (gpg) chloride

PRO CE DURE
1.

Use the graduated cylinder (0455) to measure the appropriate
amount (50 mL for ppm or 58.3 mL for gpg) of sample water.
Transfer to the Erlenmeyer flask (0431).

2.

If no sulfite is present, proceed to Step 3. If sulfite is present, use
1.0 mL pipet (0354) to add 1.0 mL of *Hydrogen Peroxide, 3%
(6091).

Add 2 drops of *Phenolphthalein Indicator, 1% (2246). Solution
should turn red. If it does not, add *Sodium Hydroxide, 0.5N
(6089), one drop at a time, until a red color appears.

4.

Add *Sulfuric Acid, 0.5N (6090), one drop at a time, until the red
color disappears.

5.

Use the 0.5 mL pipet (0353) to add 0.5 mL of *Chloride Reagent
A (4069). Swirl to mix.

6.

Fill the Automatic Buret (0427) with *Chloride Reagent B (4070).
While gently swirling the flask, titrate the sample with Chloride
Reagent B until the yellow color changes to orangish brown.
Record the buret reading.

7.

Use the following equations to determine the chloride
concentration:

ppm Chloride = 10 x (Buret Reading – 0.2 mL)

gpg Chloride = 0.5 x (Buret Reading – 0.2 mL)
