PRO CE DURE
1.

Fill the large bottle (0895) to the 75 mL line with sample water.

2.

Use the 1 mL pipet (0354) to add 3 mL of *Amine Indicator Reagent
(7607). Cork and mix.

3.

Fill a test tube (0230) to 5 mL line with *Chloroform Reagent
(6203). Add to the bottle containing sample and indicator. Cork and
shake. If the bottom chloroform layer is blue, add *Sulfuric Acid,
2.0 N (6290) one drop at a time, until the bottom layer is yellow. Do
not add more than 5 drops of *Sulfuric Acid, 2.0 N (6290).

4.

Be sure that the bottle is tightly stoppered. Shake vigorously for 3
minutes. Allow to stand until the chloroform and water layers
separate.

5.

Separate the layers as follows:
Insert the funnel (0459) into a test tube (0230). Use the test tube
holder to hold the test tube over the beaker (0896). Pour the
contents of the bottle through the funnel. The water will overflow
between the funnel and test tube into the beaker. The chloroform
layer is heavier than the water and will remain in the test tube and is
used for the color comparison. Discard the water.

6.

Dry the outside of the test tube. Insert into Filming Amine
Comparator (7606). Match sample color to a color standard. Record
as ppm filming amine.
NOTE:

If the sample contains over 10 ppm amine, the solution will

be darker than the highest standard in the comparator. Dilute the
solution with an equal volume of *Chloroform (6203). Multiply the
comparator reading by 2 to obtain the result in ppm filming amine.
