Procedure:
1. Collect a representative test sample of sand, weighing about

one pound, by quartering or by the use of a sample splitter.

2. Fill one H-3490A (12oz.) bottle with a 4.5oz. volume of the

sand sample to be treated.

3. Add the H-3491 (3% Sodium Hydroxide) to the bottle until

the volume of the sand and liquid after shaking is 7 liquid

ounces.

4. Cap the bottle, shake vigorously, and allow to stand for

24 hours.

5. Compare the color of the supernatant liquid above the

sand with the H-3492 (Organic Color Plate). Make the color

comparison by holding the Color Plate and the bottle close

together and looking through them against a background

that is substantially equal in color to the northern sky.

NOTE: This test method covers the procedure for and

approximate determination of the presence of injurious

organic compounds in natural sands, which are to be

used in cement, mortar or concrete. The principal value

for the test is to furnish a warning that further tests of

the sand are necessary before they can be approved

for use.
