FOREWORD

The Zoom-Nikkor ED 180-600mm f/8 is a special supei-telephoto zoom lens having

an optical construction of 18 elements in 11 groups. To ensure maximum performance,
the lens has been fitted with some “Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass” elements for
control of chromatic aberration and reduction of other aberration. In this lens, the use
of ED glass has enabled approximately 90% reduction of the secondary spectrum (i.e.,
the residual chromatic aberration) across the full 400 to lOOOnm wavelength range,

thus ensuring exceptional image sharpness and contrast at all apertures, including full

aperture. In fact, the degree of correction obtained enables the elimination of the re
quirement for corrective refocusing for infrared photography.

The application of Nikon Integrated Coating (NIC) to air-to-glass lens surfaces further

enhances performance by increasing image contrast and color rendition. At the same

time, NIC acts to reduce flare and ghost images on the film resulting from powerful

light sources within the picture angle of the lens.
The lens offers “automatic maximum aperture indexing” (AI) with suitably equipped

cameras*, via the meter coupling ridge provided. The ridge and the auto diaphragm
function together to permit full-aperture exposure measurement.

Other features which enhance the performance of this Zoom-Nikkor ED lens include
its relatively compact size (the length is only 402mm), the mechanical-compensation
zooming system which enables both focusing and zooming via one control ring, the

built-in rotatable tripod mounting collar for proper support when the lens is mounted
on a tripod, the exceptionally close minimum focusing distance of 2.5m (8.5 ft), and

the control ring locking screw for convenient securing of the control. The attachment

size of the lens is 95mm for mounting screw-in filters and the screw-in lens hood in

cluded with the lens.

* This lens is not equipped with a meter coupling shoe. When the lens is attached to a

non-AI Nikon camera, measure the exposure via the stop-down method. (Please
refer to the camera’s instruction manual for details.)

MOUNTING------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A

To mount the lens, position it in the camera’s bayonet mount so that the mounting

index dots on the lens and the camera body are aligned. Then, twist the camera body

clockwise until it clicks and locks into place.

To disconnect the lens and camera body, press the lens release button on the body and,

keeping the button depressed, twist the camera body counterclockwise.

MOUNTING ON THE TRIPOD

Eor maximum picture sharpness and freedom from camera shake, the use of a tripod is

recommended at all times. This Zoom-Nikkor ED lens is fitted with a sturdy, fully

rotatable (360°) tripod mounting collar for just such purposes.
