Prefocusing

(or: How to focus when you don’t want your subject in the

Normally, in order for your subject to be in cor­
rect focus, it must cover the autofocus spot in

the center of the viewfinder. If you want to

compose the picture so that your main sub­

ject is not covering that spot, follow these

steps:

Rotate the self-timer/prefocus lever ® in

the direction of the arrow until it stops

Look into the vie\A/finder and compose the

picture so that your main subject covers the

autofocus spot. Then press the shutter button
all the way down. The camera will memorize

the distance between you and the subject,
and the zone-focus scale will indicate this dis­
tance in the viewfinder (illus. A).

Recompose the picture so that your sub­

ject is where you want it to be, but DO NOT

change the shooting distance (illus. B)

Press the shutter button again for expo­

sure.
