E. Wire rod position adjustments for various
conditions.

1.

The

fi ne height adjustment knobs are located

under the carriage. The adjustment screws

are directly related to the micrometer dials.

2. There are two general positions available for

the wire rod when making a draw-down.

Which to use is determined by the

characteristics of the material being applied,

such as its viscosity, slip, and the surface

condition of the test card or substrate. Also

to be evaluated are the resulting fi lm

properties desired by the user.

2a. No. 1 position is where there is no

drawdown pressure on the test card,

and there is no air gap between the wire

rod and the test card. (Le. the wire rod

rides on top of the test card but exerts

no squeezing action.) For this setting

you should know the test card thickness

and the wire rod wire diameter.

Example: Test card thickness = 0.011“

Wire rod wire diameter = 0.003“

Sum = 0.014“

The

fi ne adjustment knob should be

set to ensure the wire rod will be

positioned on the test card surface with

no additional downward pressure on the

card. The standard spring pressure is

still in force to prevent the wire rod from

being lifted off the test card by any

resistance exerted by the material being

applied.

2b. No. 2 position provides an air gap

between the wire rod and the test card

surface. This gap can be obtained using

the fi ne adjustment knobs while reading

the dial indicators. Once the settings
