EMERGENCY CODES AND MESSAGES

Some watch models include emergency codes and messages marked on
their cases and bands. The following shows the meanings of these codes.

Source: THE CONVENTION ON INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION ANNEX

12 SIXTH EDITION AMENDMENTS II [SEARCH AND RESCUE]
“Ground-air visual signal code”

Notes

The emergency codes and messages used by this watch are only part of
the full list of codes contained in the above named source document. Also,
the codes and messages produced by the watch may differ somewhat from
the signal codes contained in the source document.

Ground-air visual signal codes are letters (such as LL, I, etc.) that are
written on the ground in order to communicate emergency information to
aircraft flying overhead.
They are part of a comprehensive system of distress codes. Ground-air
visual signal codes used alone do not communicate distress messages.
