Tao of Impedance, Ohmmm (Ω = Ohms)
When connecting speaker cabinets to an
amplifier, it is important not to exceed the
minimum impedance for which the amplifier is
rated. The PS400 bass head has a minimum
impedance rating of 4Ω. If the impedance of all
speaker cabinets connected to the amplifier is
less than 4Ω, it will cause the amplifier to
overheat. When combining speaker cabinets,
use the following chart to determine the
impedance of the combined cabinets.

Speaker Cables, Resistance Is Futile – For
best results use speaker cables that are 16-
gauge or lower. For cable lengths longer than
25 feet, use 14-gauge or 12-gauge cable. A

lower number means the cable is thicker and
produces less resistance which means better
low-frequency transmission to the cabinets.

Donʼt Phase Me Bro! When using multiple
cabinets, be sure they are all in ʻphaseʼ. If you
connect two cabinets to your amplifier and notice
a lack of bass response, most likely one of the
cabinets is out of phase. This means its
speakers are moving the opposite direction of
the other speakers causing the sound waves
from each cabinet to cancel each other out. You
can readily notice this when a single cabinet has
more bass and better response than when two
are connected. Hereʼs how to verify phase. Take
a ¼” cable. Insert one side into a cabinet and
touch the other tip of the ¼” jack to the “+” of a 9-
volt battery and the shaft to the “-” of the battery.
If all speakers move forward they are in phase.
If any of the speakers move backwards, they are
out of phase, The problem can be easily
corrected by a speaker technician.

STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW

8Ω + 8Ω = 4Ω
8Ω + 8Ω + 8Ω = 2.67Ω
8Ω + 4Ω = 2.67Ω
4Ω + 4Ω = 2Ω
8Ω + 8Ω + 8Ω + 8Ω = 2Ω

1. Tweeter Level – Three-way switch attenuates

the output level of the tweeter. Set to HI for
maximum volume, NORM for moderate
volume or OFF to disable the tweeter.

2. Speaker Input/Output – ¼” TS Phone jacks

wired in parallel. Use only unshielded 16-
gauge or lower speaker cable to connect your
amplifierʼs speaker output to either jack. Use
the other jack to daisy-chain an additional
cabinet.

Take care not to exceed the minimum

impedance of the amplifier.
