Introduction

CEL-228/K1

CEL-228

Impulse Sound Level

Meter and Octave Band Analyser

This instrument combines a sound level meter
and octave analyser giving measurement
versatility together with convenient handheld
operation. It provides, therefore, a practical and
economic solution to a wide range of noise
measurement problems. When used in its sound
level meter mode the CEL-228 will perform all
the general purpose functions expected of a full
specification instrument giving a clear and
accurate indication on its linear 40dB meter
scale of the level in terms of either dB(A) or
dB(Flat), with a choice of fast, slow or impulse
time constants. The maximum hold function may
be selected to capture the highest level during
the measurement sequence to facilitate
measurement of transient events.

CEL-228/K2

In this kit a CEL personal noise dose meter is
provided in addition to the other items listed and
a modified case to accept this additional item is
part number CEL-3380/1. The dose meter
calibrator type CEL-182 and a CEL-2834
coupler are provided in place of the CEL-184
calibrator. The presentation case shown in the
schedule of parts for the noise dose meter is not
then provided.

Having identified a problem then the octave filter
may be selected and the instrument will indicate
the band level in each octave enabling a full
spectrum of the noise to be obtained. From this
information the significant frequencies can be
identified and the appropriate remedial action
prescribed. Eight octave bands are available
plus high- and low-pass modes and these are
selected, in turn, by means of electronic
switches activated from push buttons on the
instrument's front panel.

If the sound level meter only is required it is
specified as CEL-228/X and, in this instance, the
zip case type CEL-3341 is provided in place of
the accessories listed above. It is also
recommended that the windshield type
CEL-3482 be used with the X version as it may
be accommodated within the zip case.

The CEL-228 meets the International Standard
for general purpose sound level meters and is
provided as a complete kit under the reference
CEL-228/K1 or CEL-228/K2 An output socket is
provided to feed ancillary instrumentation such
as graphic level recorders or instrumentation
tape recorders.

Preparation of the Instrument

The battery compartment is located in the rear of
the instrument and is accessible when the two
retaining screws have been removed. The
batteries should be connected to the two flying
leads and placed in the battery compartment
before replacing the cover. To check the
batteries the ON/OFF switch should be set to
the battery position and the meter should then
indicate within the scale banded BATT if they
have sufficient charge to operate the instrument
correctly. The batteries must be removed if
either becomes discharged or if the instrument
is not going to be used for some time. As an
alternative to the primary cells provided, nickel
cadmium rechargeable batteries type RS 591
089 may be used with this instrument. A suitable
charger for these NiCad batteries is the type RS
591 067 which must be specified separately.

Schedule of Parts

The instrument is normally provided as a
complete measurement kit under the number
CEL-228/K1 or CEL-228/K2 and these comprise
the following individual items:
