FAQ’S Regarding Filtration

Question: What is the definition of filter efficiency?
Answer: Filter efficiency is the ratio of particles trapped by a filter over the total number
of particles found in the air upstream to the filter. A particle counter is often used to
determine the number of particles trapped by the filter. Filter efficiency can either be
based on specific particle size ranges or based on the total number of particles of all sizes.
There are numerous testing procedures utilized for determining filter efficiency.

Particles Trapped / Particles Upstream = Filter Efficiency

EG#1 we start out with 100 particles. The filter traps 99 particles leaving 1 particle
upstream that the filter did not trap.
Therefore the filter efficiency=

Particles Trapped (99) / Particles Upstream (1)

=99÷1=99% Efficiency

Question: How do they normally do a filtration efficiency test on HEPA media?
Answer: One of the most common tests is a DOP test. The DOP test normally bombards
the filter media with particulate that is .3 micron in size and they measure upstream for
any particles that penetrated through the filter media.

Question: What is a DOP Test?
Answer: DOP stands for “Dioctyl phthalate aerosol challenge”(DOP).
The DOP test procedure can evaluate particle penetration and air flow resistance
properties of a variety of filtration materials (e.g. HEPA filters, NIOSH respirators, and
filter media). The procedure employs a cold aerosol of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) using a
TSI® CERTITEST® Model 8130 Automated Filter Tester. Test articles are challenged
with particles of the most penetrating particle size range (0.3 µm). Filtration efficiency
measurements can be determined up to 99.999%. Samples can be tested at flow rates up
to 90 L/min.

Question: Is the Enviroflex 107.1015 HEPA filter?
